About the NCBA
North Carolina Bar Association Mission Statement: Our mission is
to serve the public and the legal profession by promoting the
administration of justice and encouraging the highest standards of
integrity, competence, civility and well-being of all members of
the profession.
A voluntary organization more than 15,000 members strong, we are
the largest organization in the state serving the diverse
professional needs of lawyers.

The North Carolina Bar Association is entirely separate from the
mandatory N.C. State Bar.
The State Bar -- not the NCBA -- is the N.C. agency charged with
regulating and disciplining attorneys. All lawyers licensed to
practice in North Carolina must be members of the State Bar, which
was established by the General Assembly in the 1930s. Contact the
State Bar at 919-828-4620 to discuss concerns regarding the conduct
and professional ethics of N.C. attorneys or visit the State Bar
online at http://www.ncbar.gov/.
The Web site address, like the names and functions of the two
organizations, is similar and often confused with that of the NCBA
(http://www.ncbar.org) that you
are currently visiting.
The N.C. Bar Association, founded in 1899, serves both attorneys
and the general public with programs including professional
support, lobbying on issues of interest to the Bar,
continuing legal
education programs, legal information materials, the Lawyer Referral
Service, and support for pro bono legal services. The NCBA, which
annually counts more than 70 percent of the state's practicing
attorneys among its membership, is the largest voluntary legal
organization in North Carolina.
Platt D. Walker of Charlotte was the founding president of the
NCBA. To view a complete listing of NCBA presidents, click here.
