VOLUNTEER ONLINE FOR 3-6-9 STATEWIDE ASK-A-LAWYER DAY
Online volunteer registration has now been activated for lawyers, paralegals and law students who wish to participate in the second annual 4ALL Statewide Ask-A-Lawyer Day, scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2009. Call-in centers for the “3-6-9 Service Day” have been secured for Charlotte (WBTV), Greensboro (WFMY), Asheville (WLOS) and Raleigh (WRAL); additional sites serving eastern N.C. will be added upon confirmation. IN MEMORIAM
Susan Ivy McCrory of Charlotte, vice chair of the NCBA Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Section, died today at the age of 53. Arrangements will be included in the In Memoriam section of the NCBA Web site when they become available. Former U.S. Rep. Horace R. Kornegay of Greensboro, 84, also died today; services scheduled Friday, 2 p.m., West Market Street United Methodist Church, 303 W. Market St., Greensboro. Edwin Peter Friedberg of Cary, retired tax attorney and CPA, died Jan. 19 at the age of 88. Longtime Raleigh tax attorney Daniel Roberts Dixon II, who was also a CPA, died Jan. 17 in Wilmington at the age of 97.

DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR 2009 PRO BONO AWARDS
Jan. 30 is the deadline for nominations for the 2009 Pro Bono Awards, presented annually by the NCBA in conjunction with the Pro Bono Project. Recipients will be honored at the NCBA Annual Meeting, scheduled June 25-28 in Asheville. Please take time to access the link below and consider placing nominations for William L. Thorp Pro Bono Attorney (of the Year) Award, the Deborah Greenblatt Outstanding Legal Services Attorney Award, the Chief Justice Award, the Large and Smaller Law Firm awards and the Law Student Group Project Award. Nominations for the YLD Younger Lawyer Pro Bono Award are also facilitated through this form.

JUDGES NEEDED FOR MOOT COURT REGIONAL FINALS
Judges are now being sought for the Western and Eastern Regional Finals of the annual High School Moot Court Competition, hosted by the NCBA Young Lawyers Division. The regional finals determine which teams will meet on in Raleigh on Law Day – Friday, May 1, 2009 – for the state championship. The Western Regionals will be held in Charlotte on Saturday, March 21, and the Eastern Regionals will be in Cary on Saturday, March 28.  If you are interested in serving as a judge for all or part of the day, please contact Shalanna Pirtle (shalannapirtle@parkerpoe.com) for the Western Region and Vanessa Totten (vtotten@ncdoj.gov) or Nancy Dunn (nrdunn@ncdoj.gov) for the Eastern Region. If you are interested in coaching a team, please contact Vanessa Totten.

Of particular note is the Feb. 6 program in Southern Pines, Effective Lawyering in a Complex World, which is the annual presentation of the NCBA Lawyer Effectiveness and Quality of Life Committee, BarCARES and the State Bar’s Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP).
