NCBA EXPANDS AVAILABILITY OF BARCARES COUNSELING SERVICES

The NCBA will make BarCARES counseling services available to its members not otherwise covered next year thanks to a two-year pilot program adopted by the Board of Governors in October. The program targets those members who either do not currently have access to BarCARES through local bar associations, judicial district bars and law schools, or do not have existing health insurance coverage which, by law, is now required to include a mental health component. The pilot program takes effect Jan. 1, 2010, and will be reviewed after one year. Access the link below for additional information.

PRIVACY VITAL TO LAWYERS, FIRMS ADDRESSING BOTTOM LINE

As lawyers and firms pay closer attention to their bottom line, David Bender of the New York Law Journal contends that privacy contributes more to profit than many believe. Here are 11 reasons why: reduced risk of sanctions, reduced risk of damage from contractor malfeasance, more effective use of information, reduced customer churn, reduced probability of brand damage, avoidance of the monetary cost associated with a data breach, improved employee morale, protection against discontented employees, enhanced suitability for merger/acquisition, less likely target for litigation by competitors, and greater flexibility in bankruptcy proceedings.
