BUSY BAR: LEGISLATION FILED, 4ALL FRIDAY, ANNUAL MEETING ON TAP
A whirlwind of activity is stirring from the N.C. Bar Center in Cary to all corners of the state. Senate Bill 292, which calls for the establishment of a citizens’ commission to recommend compensation for all elected state officials, was filed last week. Sens. Dan Clodfelter and Fletcher Hartsell co-sponsored the NCBA-backed legislation; click here for details. The second annual statewide 4ALL ask-a-lawyer call-in program will take place this Friday, March 6, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; click here for more information. ECHO FOUNDATION HONORS FERGUSON STEIN TONIGHT IN CHARLOTTE
The Echo Foundation of Charlotte will honor Ferguson Stein Chambers Gresham & Sumter tonight as the recipient of the 2009 Echo Award Against Indifference. Recognition of the firm and its 12 NCBA members for their contributions in the area of civil rights was preceded by coverage in the Charlotte Observer accessible via the link below recalling the firm’s early years under founding partners Julius Chambers and two of his former interns, Adam Stein and James Ferguson.

IN MEMORIAM
Louis W. Nanney Jr., 61, died Feb. 25 in Asheville. Nanney was a resident of Rutherfordton, where he practiced law for most of his career and served as town attorney. James Arthur Corriher of Cornelius, 63, died Feb. 24. He practiced law in Salisbury for 29 years and served as president of the Rowan County Bar Association.

CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS SECTION HONORS FORMER CHIEF JUSTICE EXUM
Former Chief Justice James G. Exum Jr. of Greensboro was honored last week at the N.C. Bar Center as the 2009 recipient of the John McNeill Smith Jr. Constitutional Rights and Responsibilities Section Award. Exum, now of counsel with Smith Moore Leatherwood where he has practiced since 1996, joined the state’s highest court in 1974 and served as chief justice from 1986-94. Amanda Martin who chairs the NCBA Constitutional Rights & Responsibilities Section presented the award.

Much of the work of the NCBA and the NCBA Foundation is accomplished through their committees, and it will soon be time to make committee appointments for 2009-10. Committee participation affords excellent opportunities to meet and work with attorneys across the state, and to make a significant contribution to the legal profession.
