SEN. HAGAN APPOINTS PANEL TO SCREEN FEDERAL NOMINEES
U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan has appointed fellow NCBA members Burley Mitchell, Janice McKenzie Cole, Locke Clifford and Anthony di Santi to a newly formed panel that will screen candidates for federal judgeships and U.S. attorney posts. Mitchell, the former chief justice of the N.C. Supreme Court, will chair the panel. Cole is a former U.S. attorney who will receive the NCBA’s Liberty Bell Award on May 1 in conjunction with the YLD’s Law Day celebration; Clifford is a former member of the NCBA Board of Governors and past chair of the Criminal Justice Section; di Santi serves as vice president of the State Bar. HORN DEPARTS MAGISTRATE’S POST; JUDGE SMALL RETIRING SEPT. 1
In other developments regarding federal posts, U.S. Magistrate Judge Carl Horn III of the Western District (N.C.) completed his 16-year tenure Wednesday and will enter private practice in Charlotte with Anderson Terpening. NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR MCKNIGHT AWARD; DEADLINE APRIL 15
The Professionalism Committee of the NCBA Foundation has issued a call for nominations for the 2009 H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award. The deadline for nominations is April 15. The award, established by the Professionalism Committee in 2006 in memory of the former committee chair and U.S. District Court judge, will be presented at the 2009 NCBA Annual Meeting, scheduled June 25-28 at the Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa in Asheville.
