JUDICIARY COMMITTEE TAKES UP WYNN, DIAZ NOMINATIONS THURSDAY

Advancing at the congressional equivalent of light speed, the nominations of Judges James Wynn and Albert Diaz to the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals should move one step closer to fruition Thursday during an Executive Business Meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee. This hurdle and approval by the full U.S. Senate are now all that remain before the NCBA’s longstanding efforts to seat three judges from North Carolina on this court become a reality. Archived webcast of the nominees’ joint confirmation hearing, held Dec. 16, is accessible via the link below.

LUNCHEON HONORING BILL FRIDAY PROVES A MOST MEMORABLE EVENT

Thursday’s recognition luncheon at the N.C. Bar Center for retired UNC President William C. “Bill” Friday evolved into an oratorical showcase featuring the honoree and his presenter, John R. Jordan Jr., former chair of the UNC Board of Governors. Thus, in addition to saluting Friday for a lifetime of public service in the field of education, the NCBA Board of Governors inspired a retrospective about a group of law students who “changed the history of this state.” Access the link below for coverage and video.

MANAGE, DON’T IGNORE, THE RISKS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media is no longer emerging or expanding, it’s exploding. Accompanying this explosion, in which “communities” engage freely and exponentially in the use of “conversational media,” there are numerous risks involved for members of the legal community. But participation, experts argue, is not an option. Neither is the management of social media risks, beginning with these five steps: join the conversation; monitor the conversation; influence the conversation; limit the conversation; and empower your social media guru. Access the link below for more.

TERRY HOLLAND’S VISIT CREATES “SPORTSCENTER” ATMOSPHERE HERE

The N.C. Bar Center was a veritable “SportsCenter” Friday when ECU Athletic Director Terry Holland presented the keynote address for the joint NCBA Bar Leadership Institute and N.C. Conference of Bar Presidents Annual Meeting, one day after announcing that football coach Skip Holtz was leaving. Holland graciously agreed to interviews with area media representatives prior to his address, garnering coverage from three TV stations and one newspaper and exceptional exposure for the NCBA. Click here to access an extended interview on WRAL, click here for coverage from The News and Observer, and access the link below for more on how Holland was secured as the keynote speaker.

NCBANKROBBERS.COM SPURS ARREST OF THE “BEARCAT BANDIT”

It is unusual if not indeed unheard of for e-bar to report on the capture of an alleged bank robber, but circumstances surrounding the recent arrest of Michael James Dolphin are noteworthy because they draw attention NCBankrobbers.com. The Web site, launched last year by the North Carolina Bankers Association – “the other NCBA” – features surveillance photos and additional information about bank robberies occurring in this state. In this instance, the robber has been referred to as the “Bearcat Bandit” because surveillance video shows him wearing University of Cincinnati Bearcats’ clothing.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK

TechCrunch is a “weblog dedicated to obsessively profiling and reviewing new Internet products and companies.” The site, which also profiles existing companies that are making their presence felt on the Internet, surfaces today thanks to heads-up from Robert Ambrogi’s LawSites regarding a review of BarMax CA, a California bar exam preparation course provided exclusively via iPhone.
