WYNN, DIAZ AND JACKSON MADE HISTORY IN 2010; WHAT’S NEXT?

The confirmation of Judges James Wynn and Albert Diaz in 2010 brought to fruition a longstanding goal of the NCBA to see three North Carolinians seated on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Fellow NCBA member Barbara Jackson also made history with her election to the N.C. Supreme Court, where female jurists will soon comprise a majority for the first time in this state’s history. The coming year promises to be eventful as well, beginning with an appointment to fill Judge Jackson’s seat on the N.C. Court of Appeals and the possible confirmation of Asheville’s Max O. Cogburn Jr. to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of N.C. Cogburn, as noted in coverage accessible via the link below, was one of 19 nominations returned to President Obama by the 111th Congress.

COUNTERFEIT CHECKS RECEIVED BY FIRMS PROMPTS WARNING FROM AG

Attorney General Roy Cooper, an NCBA member, is urging members of the legal community to be on the lookout for counterfeit check scams. A warning was issued earlier this month following reports of phony checks being received by law firms in Gastonia and Oxford. The scam typically begins with an e-mail from someone claiming to be an American living overseas who requires legal help, followed by a check that the attorney is asked to deposit.
