SPECIAL FILING PERIOD OPENS FOR WYNN’S COURT OF APPEALS SEAT

The State Board of Elections has opened a Special Filing Period for the N.C. Court of Appeals seat vacated Aug. 10 by Judge James Wynn, who now serves on the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Filing opened today at 8 a.m. and will close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31. If there are more than two candidates for this seat, which will be contested Nov. 2, instant runoff voting will be used for the first time in a statewide election. TOM ROSS LEAVING DAVIDSON TO HEAD UNC SYSTEM?

Tom Ross, president of Davidson College since 2007 and a former vice president of the NCBA, will reportedly succeed Erskine Bowles as president of the University of North Carolina system. The UNC Board of Governors will hold an emergency meeting Thursday morning to elect its new president. Ross, who previously directed the AOC and the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, was appointed to the state Superior Court in 1984. Access the link below for more on this developing story.

IN MEMORIAM

Katherine Woodruff Beggs of Houston, Texas, died July 31 at the age of 59. The former Katherine Reeves Duncan was a 1975 graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Law who was licensed to practice in Texas and North Carolina.
