Justice Robert H. Edmunds Jr. and his wife, Linda, have contributed $10,000 to the LANC Fund in memory of his parents, Robert Holt and Mary Lewis Rucker Edmunds.

The LANC Fund was established by the NCBA Board of Governors in January 2007 as a named fund within the NCBA Foundation Endowment restricted to Legal Aid of North Carolina. Expansion of the fund is a major objective of the 4ALL campaign to expand the provision of civil legal services to the poor.

“The 4ALL initiative is a superb idea,” said Justice Edmunds, who served as an NCBA vice president in 2003-04.

“I was considering dropping out of law school when I participated in a summer clinical program at the University of Denver in the early ‘70s, before clinical programs were common. I asked to be assigned to a legal aid office there. As a result of those great experiences, seeing how hard those lawyers worked and the impressive results they often achieved, I decided to finish law school.

“You could say that, except for that legal aid office, I probably would not be on the court today. 4ALL provides attorneys an opportunity to demonstrate their good works while also honoring and supporting the men and women who provide legal aid.”

Justice Edmunds’ family moved to Greensboro in 1957. His mother, who died in 2006, was a Greensboro native and direct descendent of Gov. John Motley Morehead. A founding member of the Greensboro Preservation Society, she was instrumental in the restoration of Gov. Morehead’s home, Blandwood, which was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1988.

Robert Holt Edmunds, who died in 2002, was a native of Halifax, Va. Descended of legal bloodlines, his grandfather having served as a justice on Virginia’s highest court, he owned a steel fabricating company in Greensboro. The senior Edmunds was also an accomplished tennis player, claiming state doubles championships in several senior brackets.

The $10,000 contribution from Bob and Linda Edmunds helped move the LANC Fund past the $275,000 mark. For more on the fund and additional giving opportunities within the NCBA Foundation Endowment and the 4ALL campaign, please contact Tom Hull, director of development for the NCBA Foundation.
