Article Date: Tuesday, November 07, 2006

Written By: Russell Rawlings

North Carolina’s incumbent district attorneys, many of whom were unopposed, fared extremely well in the Nov. 7 election. Thirty-seven of the existing D.A. positions, coupled with two new positions, were up for election; 32 incumbents retained their positions.

The four-year terms of Kristy Newton in District 16A and Garland Yates in District 19B do not expire this year, and an additional new D.A. position in District 19D (Moore County) awaits appointment by Gov. Easley, thus accounting for a total of 42 district attorneys who will serve North Carolina in 2007.

North Carolina district attorneys will also be hiring an additional 90 assistant district attorneys.

District attorneys elected to new positions are John Snyder in District 20B, which splits Union County, and NCBA member Brad Greenway in District 29A.

The following list denotes all of the district attorneys who were either elected or re-elected on Nov. 7; an asterisk indicates an NCBA member.
