Greensboro attorney Lewis Edward Boroughs, 85, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2006.
Boroughs was born Nov. 27, 1920 in Seagrove. He graduated from Seagrove High School, completed his undergraduate studies at Campbell University, and earned his LLB, JD and LLM degrees at George Washington University Law School. He proudly served as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Korea, and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He began his professional career at the FBI in Washington, D.C. He taught one year at George Washington University law school before returning to North Carolina. He worked for 35 years at Burlington Industries Corporate headquarters in Greensboro. He served as corporate secretary, vice president, and general counsel.
He held membership in the North Carolina Bar Association and the American Bar Association, and served as an officer of the American Society of Corporate Secretaries.
Boroughs lived his faith as an active member of First Baptist Church, Greensboro for 56 years, serving as a deacon and chairman for several terms. He also served as chairman of the finance and denominational relations committees, and on a pastor search committee.
He was the church moderator, a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years and a member of a mission "building team in Chile. He was also dedicated to his alma mater, Campbell University and was honored as "Outstanding Alumnus." He served as a trustee and was on the board of presidential advisors for over 40 years.
Additionally, he served as Trustee of Boys' Homes in Lake Waccamaw and Evergreens Nursing Home. He was an active member of Sedgefield Civitans, serving one term as Lt. Governor of N.C. Civitans.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Brooks Boroughs.
