NCBA Elects VPs, Board of Govenors

The North Carolina Bar Association formally elected new vice presidents and members of the Board of Governors during the 2006 Annual Meeting in Atlantic Beach. These individuals will also serve on the Board of Directors of the NCBA Foundation, Inc.

Serving one-year terms as vice presidents will be:

Judge Louise W. Flanagan of New Bern, Chief Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. She has been affiliated with the Eastern District Court since 1995, initially as a part-time magistrate judge. She was appointed to the bench in 2003 and has served as chief judge since October 2004. Judge Flanagan received her bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University in 1984 and is a 1988 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law.

Judge Ben Tennille of Greensboro, Chief Special Superior Court Judge for Complex Business Cases. He has served on the bench since 1996, preceded by service as an associate and partner with Smith Moore Smith Schell & Hunter (1971-85) and as associate general counsel, assistant secretary and division manager for human resources and communications with Burlington Industries (1985-95). Judge Tennille is a 1967 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a 1971 graduate of the UNC School of Law.

Judge Robert W. Bryant Jr. of Selma, N.C. District Court for the 11th District (Johnston, Harnett and Lee counties). A former chair of the NCBA Family Law Section (1990-91), he joined the court this year following 19 years as a partner in Lucas, Bryant, Denning & Ellerbe, P.A., and four years (1983-87) as a partner with Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland. Judge Bryant is a 1975 UNC graduate and a 1982 graduate of the UNC School of Law.

Dean Raymond C. Pierce of Durham, dean of the North Carolina Central University School of Law. He previously served as a partner with Baker and Hostetler, LLP, and as deputy assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Education. Dean Pierce is a 1980 graduate of Syracuse University and a 1983 graduate of the Case Western Reserve University School of Law.

Serving a two-year term as vice president will be John W. Mason of Asheville, a partner with Roberts & Stevens, P.A. He joined the firm in 1975 and has served as its president since 2000. Mason, who also has served as chair of the NCBA Foundation’s Development Committee since 2000, is a past-president of the 28th Judicial District Bar. He is a 1967 graduate of Davidson College and a 1973 graduate of the UNC School of Law. Mason served as a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1967-70, earning the Bronze Star Medal (with Combat “V”) and two Purple Hearts while serving in Vietnam.

Elected to three-year terms on the Board of Governors (2006-09) were:

Gill Beck of Greensboro, Assistant U.S. Attorney. A past chair of the NCBA Government and Public Sector Section and recent recipient of its Outstanding Government and Public Sector Attorney Award, Beck recently served as a U.S. Army Reserve Judge Advocate in Iraq. He is a 1978 graduate of Appalachian State University and a 1985 graduate of the Duke University School of Law.

Jean G. Carter of Raleigh, a partner with Hunton & Williams, LLP. A past chair of the NCBA Estate Planning & Fiduciary Law Section and the Multidisciplinary Practice Task Force, she graduated from Wake Forest University in 1977 with a degree in accounting. After three years as a certified public accountant with Arthur Andersen & Co., Carter entered the Duke University School of Law and graduated in 1983. She practiced from 1983-90 as an associate and partner with Moore & Van Allen.

James E. Cross Jr. of Oxford, senior partner with Royster, Cross & Currin, LLP, where he has practiced since 1978. The attorney for the Granville County School Board since 1995, Cross has served as treasurer of the N.C. Board of Public Telecommunications and as a member of the N.C. Council of School Attorneys Executive Committee since 2003. Cross graduated from Wake Forest University in 1970 and the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1973.

Sen. Fletcher L. Hartsell Jr. of Concord, an eight-term member of the General Assembly representing the 36th Senate District (Cabarrus and Rowan counties). A partner in the firm of Hartsell & Williams, P.A., where he has practiced since 1972, Hartsell is a past-president of the Cabarrus County Bar Association (1987-88) and the 19A Judicial District Bar (1985-86). He is a 1969 graduate of Davidson College and a 1972 graduate of the UNC School of Law.

Rebecca S. Henderson of Charlotte, deputy general counsel for Wachovia Corp. since 2000. Formerly a partner with Kilpatrick Stockton LLP, she is a former chair of the NCBA Bankruptcy Section and the Carolinas Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association. Henderson is a 1980 graduate of Appalachian State University and received her law degree from the UNC School of Law in 1985.

Tiffanie W. Sneed of Fayetteville, police attorney for the Fayetteville Police Department. Formerly an associate with Young, Moore & Henderson, P.A., and assistant city attorney for the City of Fayetteville, she serves on the ABA House of Delegates and previously received the ABA Award of Achievement. Sneed is a 1995 graduate of Yale University and a 1998 graduate of the UNC School of Law.

Edward C. Winslow III of Greensboro, managing partner of Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard, LLP, where he has practiced since 1974. A past chair of the NCBA Business Law Section, Winslow served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1969-71 and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and special award of the Vietnamese Army. A Tarboro native, he attended the Université of Montpellier in 1966-67, graduated from Davidson College in 1968 and received his law degree from the UNC School of Law in 1974.

M. Gray Styers Jr. of Raleigh was elected to fill the final year of an unexpired term as a member of the Board of Governors. A past chair of the Administrative Law Section and the CLE Committee, Styers has also served on the Litigation Section council. A partner in Blanchard, Jenkins, Miller, Lewis & Styers, PA, Styers received his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University in 1985, and earned his J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from the UNC in 1989.
