Oak Island town attorney Roger Edwards died Tuesday after a bout with cancer.
Edwards, 53, also had a private law practice based at Oak Island. He was a 1979 graduate of the Norman A. Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University.
There will be a memorial service Thursday at 2:00 at Ocean View United Methodist Church, said the Rev. Fred Roberts.
Edwards moved to the area more than a decade ago and was town attorney for Yaupon Beach for a couple of years before Yaupon merged with the town of Long Beach to form Oak Island. He served as Oak Island town attorney since its inception in 1999.
Oak Island mayor Johnnie Vereen said Edwards loved the town and dedicated himself to its needs during a period of significant change.
“He loved what he did and where he lived,” Vereen said. “He had fortitude and was dedicated to the community. He wanted what was best for the town and he watched over it.”
Vereen said Edwards put a lot of heart into the job and worked very hard on a portion of his law practice that wasn’t nearly as profitable as private clients.
Edwards was a longtime member of Ocean View United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife Karen, an Oak Island property appraiser; a stepchild and a brother from Asheville.
