General Assembly Gains Two Lawyers

Article Date: Tuesday, January 02, 2007

Written By: Russell Rawlings

Through last week’s election, the legal profession has gained a total of two seats in the General Assembly over the past two years. The latest addition is Rep. Jimmy Love Sr., a Sanford attorney and NCBA member who was elected Nov. 7. He previously served five terms in the House from 1967-76.

The father of District Court Judge Jimmy Love Jr. of Sanford, the senior Love joins Dan Blue and Larry Hall as lawyer legislators and NCBA members who were not serving in the N.C. House at the outset of the 2005-06 biennium.

Blue, a Raleigh attorney who previously served 22 years in the General Assembly, including two terms as Speaker of the House, was recently named to replace the late Bernard Allen. Blue then received the votes cast for Allen, who was unopposed in House District 33, in last week’s election.

Hall, who practices law in Durham, was a mid-term appointee who served during the recent short session. He ran unopposed in House District 29.

The newest lawyer legislator in the Senate is Pete Brunstetter of Winston-Salem who was appointed in May to the seat previously occupied by the late Hamilton C. “Ham” Horton. Brunstetter, a member of the NCBA, was unopposed in Senate District 31.

A total of 38 lawyer legislators now serve in the General Assembly with 17 attorneys in the Senate (34%) and 21 in the House (17.5%).

The NCBA encourages the participation of citizen lawyers in the lawmaking process and extends its appreciation to all members of the legal profession who serve in the General Assembly. The NCBA Office of Governmental Affairs is especially grateful for the efforts, support and cooperation it receives from our lawyer legislators and looks forward to working closely with the individuals denoted below in the forthcoming biennium which convenes Jan. 24.
