NC LEAP Receives $30,000 Boost

Article Date: Wednesday, February 07, 2007

Written By: Russell Rawlings

The NC Lawyers for Entrepreneurs Assistance Program (NC LEAP) is maintaining its momentum toward a spring 2007 launch thanks to law firm and corporate commitments of more than $180,000, paced by a recent $30,000 gift from Moore & Van Allen and $20,000 from Kennedy Covington Lobdell & Hickman.

Bolstered by the success of ongoing fund-raising efforts, the search for NC LEAP’s founding director has been completed and will be announced soon by the North Carolina Bar Association Foundation.

The new pro bono opportunity for N.C. lawyers, which is being led by the Business Law and Corporate Counsel sections of the NCBA, will link volunteer attorneys with low wealth, rural and minority entrepreneurs in need of legal assistance, thereby creating an outstanding opportunity for business lawyers handling business-related pro bono matters.

To date (2-7-07), major financial support has been provided by:

  • Moore & Van Allen, $30,000;
  • Bank of America, $25,000;
  • Kennedy Covington Lobdell & Hickman, $20,000;
  • Kilpatrick Stockton LLP, $20,000;

  • Maupin Taylor PA, $5,000;
  • Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson, $5,000;

  • Hutchison Law Group, $2,500;
  • Johnston, Allison & Hord, P.A., $2,000;

The NCBA and the NCBA Foundation have committed $30,000 toward this endeavor, which was initiated by the Business Law Section, whose members have provided $52,500 in NC LEAP support through their current and carryover section dues.
