The North Carolina Bar Association is proud to announce a historic two-day event featuring the Hon. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Presented by the NCBA’s Women in the Profession Committee, “The Changing Face of Justice: A View from the Bench” will take place on Oct. 18-19, 2007, at Asheville’s Grove Park Inn.

The event will begin on Thursday, Oct. 18, with a reception and dinner featuring a conversation with Justice Ginsburg. On Friday, Oct. 19, the Women in the Profession Committee will present a symposium featuring an NCBA Foundation CLE program in panel discussion format. Additional information will be made available regarding the CLE once details have been finalized.

The program will address “hot” topics such as judicial independence, post-appellate relief in criminal cases, including innocence commissions, changes in immigration law, and civil liberties in a post 9/11 world. There will also be a luncheon for the participants.

Perhaps the event’s most unique feature is the fact that all of the female chief justices from the highest courts in each state, as well as some former female chief justices, are being invited to attend and participate in the program.

Chief Justice Sarah Parker of the N.C. Supreme Court and S.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal have already agreed to attend.

An event agenda is accessible via the link below. Questions may be directed to Judge Christine Walczyk, chair of the NCBA Women in the Profession Committee at cwalczyk@mindspring.com or (919) 833-7722, or Michelle Frazier, assistant executive director of the NCBA, at mfrazier@ncbar.org or (800) 662-7407, ext 310.

The Grove Park Inn and the Crowne Plaza are already accepting reservations for this event, which occurs during peak leaf season in the western North Carolina mountains. Contact either facility and mention your connection to the NCBA to obtain the special event rate.
