The Antitrust & Trade Regulation Section of the North
Carolina Bar Association has recognized John F. Graybeal of Raleigh
as the inaugural recipient of its Distinguished Service Award.
Presentation of the award took place on Friday, April 3, in
conjunction with the section's annual meeting in Greensboro. Jon
Heyl, section chair, presented the award.
Graybeal has maintained of counsel status with Parker Poe Adams
& Bernstein since 2005. He originally joined the firm's
predecessor in 1987 after serving in the Antitrust Division of the
U.S. Justice Department.
A former member and past chair of the Chatham County Planning
Board, Graybeal taught the antitrust law course at the UNC School
of Law from 2000-05. He also served as the first chair of the
Antitrust & Trade Regulation Section in 1990-91.
In accepting the award, Graybeal expressed mixed emotions. On
the one hand, he noted, it was indeed a significant honor to be
recognized as such by his peers.
"It was also a bit embarrassing," Graybeal added, "because I
know how hard so many have worked to organize and maintain this
section."
His nomination makes it clear that this 1962 graduate of the
Harvard University School of Law was indeed the appropriate choice
for the new award.
"It goes without saying that John has the highest level of
competence in the area of antitrust law," states nominating
materials submitted by Parker Poe colleague Catharine Biggs
Arrowood. "Chambers USA regularly lists him as a top-ranked
antitrust lawyer. In addition, John has had a significant impact on
his community.
"Despite his highly sophisticated practice, John has
consistently volunteered his legal services to individuals and his
community," including the N.C. Justice Center in Raleigh.
"I have worked with John for over 20 years for a wide variety of
clients," Arrowood continues, "and can personally attest that he is
a most effective advocate for clients while always being mindful of
the public interest.
"I cannot think of a better choice for the section's first
Distinguished Service Award."
