Burr, Hagan Will Address Annual Meeting

Attendees of the 2009 NCBA Annual Meeting, scheduled June 25-28 at the Grove
Park Inn Resort & Spa in Asheville, will have a rare opportunity to hear
U.S. Sens. Richard Burr and Kay Hagan at the same event.
North Carolina’s U.S. Senators will both appear on the NCBA Annual Meeting
stage during the Saturday morning General Session. This portion of the program,
during which each senator will appear individually for remarks followed by
questions and answers, will fall under the agenda heading of “The View from
Capitol Hill: Issues and Answers.”
Sen. Burr appeared at the 2004 NCBA Annual Meeting when he was seeking his
first term in the U.S. Senate following five terms as a member of the U.S. House
of Representatives from North Carolina’s 5th congressional district.
Sen. Hagan appeared at the 2008 NCBA Annual Meeting as a candidate for her
first term in the U.S. Senate following five terms in the N.C. Senate, where she
represented Guilford County.
This unique appearance of our U.S. Senators during the same is but one of a
number of exceptional events and activities in store at the 2009 NCBA Annual
Meeting, including the Family Dinner at Taylor Ranch on Friday evening, golf and
tennis tournaments on Friday, and in incredible schedule of CLE programs.

The highlight of the Annual Meeting is the passing of the gavel which will
occur on Saturday evening, June 27, as John Wester of Charlotte succeeds Charles
Becton of Durham as the 115th president of the NCBA.
Gala events surrounding the installation ceremony include a banquet and
performance by the Mecklenburg Bar Revue.
The Annual Meeting speakers list also includes Chief Justice Sarah Parker,
ESPN personality and NCBA member Jay Bilas, CLE superstar and NCBA
Past-President Don Cowan, NFL official Walt Coleman, Wachovia senior economist
Mark Vitner, and Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue who will address the Sunday prayer
breakfast.
The honor roll of award recipients begins with F. Leary Davis, founding dean
of law schools at Campbell University and Elon University, who has been selected
to receive the North Carolina Bar Association’s highest honor, the Judge John J.
Parker Award.
Presentation of the award will take place during the Saturday morning General
Session. The name of the individual chosen to be president-elect of the NCBA
will also be placed in nomination during this General Session. Upon his or her
election, the president-elect will serve in that capacity during the 2009-10
association year and as president of the NCBA during 2010-11.
Edmund I. Adams of Sparta has been selected as the fifth recipient of the Dr.
I. Beverly Lake Public Service Award. Presentation of the award will take place
during the Friday morning General Session.
The H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award will be presented during the
President’s Luncheon on Friday, June 26, to longtime Charlotte attorney Mark
Bernstein.
The Pro Bono Service Awards will also be presented during the President’s
Luncheon. The recipients are Thomas Berkau of Smithfield (William L. Thorp
Award), Christine Trottier of Raleigh (Deborah Greenblatt Outstanding Legal
Services Attorney Award), Hunton & Williams of Raleigh and Charlotte (Large
Law Firm Award), Charlotte School of Law (Law Students Pro Bono Project Award)
and Laura Slaughter of Rutherfordton (Younger Lawyer Pro Bono Award, presented
by the NCBA Young Lawyers Division).
The newest members of the General Practice Hall of Fame, who will be inducted
on Thursday night, June 25, are J. Mac Boxley of Raleigh, Charles E. Clement of
Boone, William H. Holdford of Wilson, William P. Mayo of Washington, Bobby Burns
McNeill of Raeford, Meyressa H. Schoonmaker of Winston-Salem and Henry P. “Hank”
Van Hoy II of Mocksville.
Citizen Lawyer Awards will be presented during the Friday morning General
Session. The recipients are Carole Bruce of Greensboro, Sen. Dan Clodfelter,
Kristi Kessler Walters, Robert Harrington and Shirley Fulton of Charlotte, Paul
Meggett of Hillsborough, James Narron of Smithfield, Kim Stogner of
Winston-Salem, Lisa Angel of Raleigh, Philip Baddour Jr. of Goldsboro, Paul Holt
Jr. of Sylva and Wade Harrison of Burlington.
