Forty-eight first responders and their spouses were served by a volunteer workforce of 20 which included 13 attorneys.

"The feedback was all positive," said Susan Finch who serves as co-chair of the YLD Wills for Heroes Committee with Jake Epstein. "We had a lot of attorneys who said they want to volunteer for another Wills for Heroes event, and quite a few first responders and attorneys who asked if we would do another event in Asheville."

Most of the first responders who attended the Oct. 17 event were members of the Asheville Fire Department or the Asheville Police Department.

Wills for Heroes provides free essential estate planning documents including wills and powers of attorney to first responders including policemen, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and their spouses.

The NCBA Young Lawyers Division adopted Wills for Heroes as a public service project in 2007 and has previously held programs in Charlotte, Salisbury, Greensboro, Statesville, Raleigh, Cary, Winston-Salem and Wilmington. Volunteer attorneys in North Carolina have prepared thousands of estate planning documents for first responders and their spouses at no charge.

The Wills for Heroes Foundation was established by attorneys Anthony Hayes of South Carolina and Jeff Jacobson of Arizona after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Foundation works to assist first responders across the country in a number of ways, including providing free estate planning documents and other financial assistance programs.
