Wilmington Area Wills for Heroes May 30

Article Date: Monday, May 25, 2009

The Young Lawyers Division of the North Carolina Bar Association will be holding a Wills for Heroes event in eastern North Carolina on Saturday, May 30, at the McKeithan Center at the North Campus Cape Fear Community College in Castle Hayne, which is located at 4500 Blue Clay Road, just north of Wilmington.

This event will begin with the first appointments at 10 a.m. and lasting until approximately 5 p.m. (with the last appointments scheduled for 4 p.m.) No prior estate planning background is required to serve as an attorney or non-attorney volunteer.

First responders who wish to schedule an appointment should contact Susan Pate, Wilmington Police Department Program Specialist, via telephone at (901) 342-2743 or via email at Susan.Pate@wilmingtonnc.gov.

Licensed N.C. attorneys are needed to draft the wills. First responders are provided with a questionnaire to fill out beforehand, and it corresponds with the fill in the blank HotDocs software used to draft the estate planning documents. Notaries, witnesses and people to help entertain the children of first responders are also needed.

“We would like everyone to volunteer all day if possible,” stated Clark Walton and Susan Finch who serve as co-chairs of the YLD Wills for Heroes Committee. “But we appreciate any time that you can volunteer. If you can only volunteer for part of the day, please indicate if you would like to volunteer for the morning session (9 a.m. – 1 p.m.) or the afternoon session (noon – 5 p.m.)

Training for this event is scheduled at 9 a.m. for morning session and all day volunteers, and at noon for afternoon volunteers. During this time, there will be about 30 minutes of training on basic N.C. law regarding wills, and about 30 minutes of practicing on the computers using HotDocs software in case there are any questions.

“If you are a licensed attorney practicing in the area of trusts and estates,” the co-chairs added, “please let us know if you would be willing to help with the training. In addition, if you are experienced in the area of trusts and estates, you will serve as a floater during the actual event to answer any questions that the other attorneys drafting the wills may have.”

Additional materials will be e-mailed to those who sign up to participate; however, prior to the event date it will also be helpful to review the following “This is the Law Pamphlets” available on the NCBA Web site:

(1) Living Wills and Healthcare Powers of Attorney http://www.ncbar.org/public/publications/pamphlets/livingWills06.pdf; and

(2) Protecting Your Assets: Wills, Trusts, and Powers of Attorney http://www.ncbar.org/public/publications/pamphlets/protectingYourAssets06.pdf

“As you can see, there is plenty to do and we need as much help as possible,” the co-chairs concluded. “If you or someone you know (including non-attorney staff members at your work or friends) would like to volunteer for either or both of these events, please fill out the questionnaire below and email your responses to Jacquelyn Terrell at the NCBA at sections@ncbar.org.

“Please let Jacquelyn know whether you are a licensed N.C. attorney, whether you are a notary, whether you have estate planning experience, and the amount of time that you are available to volunteer.”

Additional questions should be directed to Clark Walton by e-mail (cwalton@mayerbrown.com) or by telephone at (704-444-3601); or Susan Finch by email (sfinch@susanfinchlaw.com) or by telephone at (919-624-9772).
