James T. "Jim" Williams Jr. of Greensboro was
honored recently as the fourth recipient of The Advocate's Award.
Presented by the Litigation Section of the North Carolina Bar
Association, the award recognizes "superstars" of the section and
the legal profession.
Allison Van Laningham, section chair, presented the award in
Wilmington on June 24 at the section's annual meeting, which was
held in conjunction with the NCBA Annual Meeting.
Previous recipients of the award are Charles Becton, Don Cowan and
Grady Barnhill.
Williams is a partner with Brooks Pierce McLendon Humphrey &
Leonard, where he has practiced since 1966, the year in which he
graduated from the Wake Forest University School of Law. He is also
a 1962 graduate of Wake Forest University.
Williams has chaired the firm's management committee since 1996.
His practice is concentrated in business litigation and corporate
matters for both businesses and professional organizations.
A member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Williams
chaired the organization's North Carolina State Committee from
2002-04. He has also served as chair of the AOC Liaison Committee
and the Civil Justice Reform Act Advisory Group for the U.S.
District Court for the Middle District of N.C.
At Wake Forest University, Williams has served on the Board
of Trustees since 2002 and as its chair since 2009. He has also
served nearly 20 years on the Board of Visitors for the Wake Forest
University School of Law, which he chaired in 2001.
Williams has also compiled an extensive resume of civic
contributions, including service as chair of the Community
Foundation of Greensboro from 2007-09 and membership on the Board
of Directors since 2004. He has also served on the Board of
Visitors for Wake Forest University and on the boards of Wake
Forest University Health Sciences, the Wake Forest University
Baptist Medical Center Comprehensive Cancer Center, Blue Cross Blue
Shield of North Carolina and the Greensboro Area Chamber of
Commerce.
In Greensboro and Guilford County, Williams served on the
Guilford County School Merger Task Force, the Greensboro Public
School Excellence Fund and the Greensboro City Board of
Education.
His nomination for this award was submitted by law partners
S. Leigh Rodenbough IV, Jim W. Phillips Jr. and Jennifer K. Van
Zant.
"As a leader of our firm, Jim has imparted his views about
balancing one's personal and professional life to all of his
colleagues," the nomination states. "More importantly, Jim by his
own actions has served as a role model for all who have followed
him in how to be a successful husband, father, grandfather,
community leader, partner and advocate."
In addition to the NCBA, Williams is a member of the ABA
and the Greensboro Bar Association.
