The Labor and Employment Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association recently honored Dan McGinn of Greensboro as the 2010 recipient of the Jonathan R. Harkavy Award.
The award was presented in Asheville on October 22-23 at the section’s annual joint CLE seminar with the S.C. Bar’s Employment and Labor Law Section.
“I was totally surprised,” said McGinn, who has represented N.C. businesses in labor and employment matters for Brooks Pierce since 1971. “My law partners, my wife, and Jon Harkavy did a good job keeping a secret.”
Harkavy and Brian Clarke, immediate past chair of the section, presented the award.
The honor, McGinn said, was especially meaningful in part because it is named for Harkavy and in part because it reflects positively on his mentor, the late Thornton Brooks.
“First of all,” McGinn said, “what makes this award special to me is the fact that it is named for Jon Harkavy, who is the most respected labor and employment lawyer in the state. Jon transcends the labor and employment practice in that, while he has historically represented employees, he has the total respect and trust of those of us who represent employers. He’s become the preeminent mediator in the state for that reason.”
“My mentor when I joined Brooks Pierce in 1971 was Thornton Brooks, then considered by most to be the leading labor and employment lawyer in North Carolina. I had the pleasure and luxury of traveling around with him trying employment cases for 18 years. He was a wonderful mentor and role model, and anything that I have accomplished as an employment lawyer can definitely be laid at his feet. I accepted this award in Asheville in memory of and as a tribute to Thornton Brooks.”
McGinn is a 1967 cum laude graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law who received his bachelor’s degree in political science magna cum laude from Wake Forest in 1964. He served in the U.S. Nay as a member of the JAG Corps prior to joining the Brooks Pierce firm.
McGinn, who has served as a chair of the Labor and Employment Law Section, is the third recipient of this award, preceded by Harkavy and John J. Doyle, Jr.
