NCBA Annual Meeting June 24-27; Register Online Now!

The countdown is on for the 2010 Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Bar Association, scheduled June 24-27 at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside.

Many components of the program are set, including the confirmation of several featured speakers: David Gergen, acclaimed journalist and political commentator; former Colorado Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Love Kourlis who serves as executive director of the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System at the University of Denver; and Jerry Moore, three-time national champion Appalachian State University football coach who will be the featured speaker at Sunday’s Family Prayer Breakfast.

Candidates for the U.S. Senate and contested appellate court races in North Carolina will also appear on the program.

THURSDAY,  JUNE 24

Convention Central

Our Registration Desk Area will be located in Convention Central (Azalea Ballroom) from Thursday afternoon through Saturday noon. It should be your first stop upon arrival in Wilmington for registration, name badges, event tickets and official program information. Free continental breakfast on Friday and Saturday mornings and refreshments all day long. Check your e-mail at the Cyber Café. 


Early Arrivals Reception honoring the Judiciary and Hall of Fame Honorees

Join fellow early arrivals for this complimentary kickoff reception at the hotel prior to the General Practice Hall of Fame Dinner. All convention exhibitors will be set up with many gift items and bid on the YLD Art Auction

 

General Practice Hall of Fame Dinner

Since 1989, the General Practice Section has recognized outstanding attorneys whose careers have served as models for lawyers in the general practice of law. The dinner will immediately follow the early arrivals reception next door in the Coast Line Convention Center Riverview Terrace Room. The inductees are P.C. Barwick Jr. of Kinston, David Reece Cockman of Raleigh, Orville D. Coward Sr. of Sylva, James F. “Jim” Morgan of High Point, Harold Lee Pollock of Burgaw and Eugene C. Thompson III of Warsaw.

 

Art by Lawyers Exhibition Silent Auction

Donated items will be on display over the weekend. Proceeds from the Art by Lawyers Exhibition and Silent Auction, sponsored by the YLD Arts, Entertainment and Sports Law Committee, benefit Legal Aid of North Carolina.

FRIDAY, JUNE 25

Friday Morning General Session

Headlining the Friday session will be former Colorado Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Kourlis, Executive Director of the Institute for the Advancement of the Legal System. She will speak about judicial performance evaluation. North Carolina’s Chief Justice, Sarah Parker, will give her “State of the Judiciary” speech. Appellate and Supreme Court candidates will participate in a judicial candidates’ forum.

 

President’s Luncheon

The luncheon features presentation of the 2010 Pro Bono Awards to many dedicated lawyers and law firms. The H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award will also be presented. Law schools, specialty bars, NCBA and legal service groups will be represented.

 

Golf Tournament

The 2010 Tournament is calling all players for a round of fun on Friday afternoon at a local golf course. Cost includes greens and cart fees plus refreshments and lunch. Prizes will be awarded to top performers.

 

Tennis Tournament

Get in the swing of things! Mixed doubles round-robin. Balls and refreshments provided. Advance ticket purchase required for this Friday afternoon event at nearby outdoor courts. Prizes to top male and female players.

 

YLD Executive Quarterly Meeting & Reception

The YLD leadership convenes with their executive meeting followed by a fun reception on the pool deck.

 

Law School Receptions

Don’t miss the opportunity to reconnect with law school friends and network with other alumni. All seven of North Carolina’s law schools will be represented at the evening reception on Friday night from 5-7 pm.

 

YLD Fellows Dinner

The YLD Fellows includes all past chairs of the Division over the past six decades and their guests. This dinner event on Friday night will be held at a downtown Wilmington restaurant and is by invitation only.

 

Family Dinner on the Henrietta III

Fun and games for children of all ages will be on tap as we ride down the Cape Fear River on Friday night. The riverboat returns about 9 pm to the downtown dock near the Hilton providing a front row seat for our fireworks blasting off from the USS North Carolina Park just across the river from the Hilton.  

 

Fireworks over the Cape Fear River

Gather on the Riverwalk just after 9 pm for an exciting fireworks display over the Cape Fear River. The blast-off spot is just across the river at the USS North Carolina Park. Coffee and dessert will also be available at the hotel pool deck.


SATURDAY, JUNE 26

5K Legal –Run-Around & Fun Walk

All marathon runners, weekend joggers and healthy walkers will enjoy the 5-kilometer race starting at the Hilton main entrance driveway at 7:30 Saturday morning with registration open at 7 a.m. Colorful T-shirts will be awarded to all who pre-register and complete the course around downtown Wilmington. This free event is sponsored by Lawyers Insurance Agency. Prizes will be awarded for both adults and children.

 

Saturday Morning General Session

The General Session will feature David Gergen, CNN commentator and advisor to four presidents, who will be the 23rd Willis Smith & Willis Smith, Jr. Professionalism & Ethics Speaker. Candidates for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Richard Burr, who is seeking re-election, are expected to join us for a senatorial candidates’ forum.

 

YLD Luncheon & Annual Meeting

All YLD members and alumni are encouraged to attend and hear updates on many exciting YLD projects. An outstanding speaker will keynote the luncheon event. Outgoing Chair Craig Cannon and other YLD leaders will be recognized.

 

Reception honoring all Past Presidents hosted by Senior Lawyers Division

Here is a perfect opportunity to get your Saturday night off to an early start with a relaxing reception. There are thirty-three Past Presidents of the NCBA and we hope most of them will be in attendance. Refreshments with light hors d’oeuvres will be served.

 

Saturday Night Gala Banquet

Don’t miss the highlight of the 2010 convention! The evening begins with your attendance at the Past President’s reception hosted by the Senior Lawyers Division followed by a traditional sit-down banquet in the Grand Ballroom. The President’s Swearing-in, Passing of the Gavel and speech will be the culmination of the evening’s agenda. Eugene C. Pridgen of Charlotte was elected president-elect last summer and will succeed fellow Charlotte attorney John R. Wester as the 116th president of the NCBA

 

Saturday Night Entertainment

The North Carolina Bar Awards, a festive, parodistic celebration and presentation of the Much-Coveted Golden Limine, will highlight the Saturday night entertainment. Musical parodies will be presented by members of the Tenth Judicial District--and they may take a shot at honoring some of the estimable dinner guests.

 

Saturday Night Dance & Dessert

Wrap up the evening with dessert and dance music by the Special Occasion Band.


SUNDAY, JUNE 27
Family Prayer Breakfast
This Sunday morning Family Prayer Breakfast is a Christian service that welcomes everyone. Sponsored and organized by the Campbell University Norman A. Wiggins School of Law. Jerry Moore, three-time national champion football coach at Appalachian State University, will be the featured speaker.
