The North Carolina Bar Association's Attorney Exchange Program is headed to Turkey later this week for a two-week visit hosted by the bar associations of Istanbul and Ankara.

A delegation that includes 13 NCBA members will depart on May 28 and will return June 9. Raleigh attorney Deborah Hildebran-Bachofen is serving as the delegation leader.

Delegates include Justice Paul Newby of the N.C. Supreme Court, Linda Markus Daniels of Durham, Kelly Daughtry of Smithfield, Becky French, William Harazin, Mary Hulett and Ronald Tucceri of Raleigh, Richard Gabriel of Greensboro, Cecilia Johnson of Asheville, Susan Montaquila of Wake Forest University and Steven Sadler of Charlotte.

Organized through the NCBA's International Law and Practice Section, the exchange program is designed to foster professional understanding through the exchange of ideas, information and experiences on the practice of law in each legal system.

The program was launched in 2006 when an NCBA delegation visited Taiwan. The NCBA sent a delegation to Argentina in 2008 and hosted delegates from Argentina last year.

Members of the Turkish bar are expected to visit North Carolina next year.

A hectic itinerary begins with a week in Istanbul, the nation's largest city which was formerly known as Constantinople. Sessions with local lawyers and firms, judges and prosecutors are planned.

Similar programs are scheduled during the second week of the excursion in the capital city of Ankara. Delegates will also meet with the Consul of State and visit the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (The Parliament).

Regular reports will be filed throughout the excursion and will be accessible via the NCBA's new Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/NCBAorg) and Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/NCBAorg) pages.
