Swearing-In Ceremonies, Procedures Provided

The North Carolina Bar Association, in an effort to assist newly licensed North Carolina attorneys who successfully completed the July 2010 bar exam, has solicited the following information regarding swearing-in ceremonies and procedures from local and judicial district bar associations across the state.

 

Cities, counties and judicial districts not included here are invited to contact the NCBA with details regarding their respective ceremonies or swearing-in procedures.

Buncombe County
The Buncombe County swearing-in of new attorneys will occur in the 5th Floor Courtroom of the Buncombe County Courthouse in Asheville on Friday, Sept. 24, at 4:30 p.m. The swearing-in will follow a full day of orientation at both the county and the federal courthouses in Asheville, coordinated by the 28th Judicial District Bar.

There are no plans for a formal ceremony. New attorneys who would like to be sworn in after passing the July Bar Exam should review the documents accessible via the links below which provide instructions and forms necessary to be sworn in. Please contact the District Court Judge's Office at 678-2901 or the Superior Court Judge's Office at 321-3847 to schedule a swearing-in ceremony.

Pitt County Bar Association
The Pitt County Bar Association has organized swearing-in ceremonies for newly licensed attorneys on Thursday, Sept. 9. The Honorable W. Russell Duke, Jr., will swear in those seeking admission to the North Carolina State Bar at 1:30 p.m. in Superior Courtroom No. 1. Those persons seeking admission to the United States District Court, Eastern District of North Carolina, will be sworn in at 3:00 p.m. by The Honorable Malcolm J. Howard. This ceremony will take place at the Federal Courthouse at 201 S. Evans Street. 

If you know someone who needs to be sworn into the State Bar, please contact Connie Bland at 252-695-7260. Please provide her with the name of the person to be sworn in and the name of the attorney presenting the individual to the court. New attorneys must bring a copy of the oath to the ceremony for Judge Duke’s signature. The oath is provided to the new attorney along with his or her license. 

Those wishing to be sworn in to practice before our local federal trial court, the Eastern District of North Carolina, should contact Kimberly Swank at 252-830-2322. The Local Rules require that applicants submit a written application (which can be obtained online via the court’s website at  http://www.nced.uscourts.gov/html/forms.htm) containing certification by two attorneys who are members in good standing with the Court and stating that the applicant is of good moral character and professional reputation. An admission fee is also required. 

The PCBA will be hosting a reception immediately following the Swearing-In Ceremonies to welcome the new admittees to our profession and community. The reception will be in the lobby outside Superior Courtroom No. 1 at the Pitt County Courthouse. All members of the bar are encouraged to attend. 

Wake County
The Wake County Bar Association and 10th Judicial District Bar will hold a swearing-in ceremony on Monday, Sept. 20, in Meymandi Concert Hall, Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts, Raleigh at 2 p.m. Judges Ripley Rand and Paul Gessner will preside.
