The Young Lawyers Division of the North Carolina Bar Association is hosting a Wills for Heroes program in Greensboro on Saturday, March 27, at the Public Safety Training Facility located at 1510 North Church Street, in Greensboro, North Carolina 27405.

Wills for Heroes provides free essential estate planning documents including wills and powers of attorney to first responders including policemen, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and their spouses.

This event will begin with the first appointments at 10 a.m. and lasting until approximately 5 p.m. (with the last appointments scheduled for 4 p.m.) No prior estate planning background is required to serve as an attorney or non-attorney volunteer.

Licensed N.C. attorneys are needed to draft the wills. First responders are provided with a questionnaire to fill out beforehand, and it corresponds with the fill in the blank HotDocs software used to draft the estate planning documents. Volunteer notaries and witnesses are also needed.

If you have additional questions contact Jacquelyn Terrell, director of sections and divisions, via e-mail at sections@ncbar.org.

First responders from Greensboro and the surrounding area who wish to participate are instructed to contact Leslie Lippa of the Greensboro Fire Department via e-mail at Leslie.Lippa@greensboro-nc.gov.

Space is limited and appointments will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis, so please contact Mrs. Lippa as soon as possible if you are interested in scheduling an appointment.

The Wills for Heroes Foundation was established by attorneys Anthony Hayes of South Carolina and Jeff Jacobson of Arizona after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Foundation works to assist first responders across the country in a number of ways, including providing free estate planning documents and other financial assistance programs.

More information on the Wills for Heroes program can be found at www.willsforheroes.org

The NCBA Young Lawyers Division adopted Wills for Heroes as a public service project in 2007 and has previously held programs in Charlotte, Salisbury, Greensboro, Statesville, Raleigh, Cary, Winston-Salem, Wilmington, and Asheville. Volunteer attorneys in North Carolina have prepared thousands of estate planning documents for first responders and their spouses at no charge.

YLD has also scheduled a Wills for Heroes program in Chapel Hill that will be held on Saturday, April 24. Details regarding this event including registration will be provided soon.

Susan Finch and Jake Epstein are serving as co-chairs of the YLD Wills for Heroes Committee this year.
