Wills For Heroes Program Serves 175 In Charlotte

The Young Lawyers Division of the North Carolina Bar Association conducted another successful Wills for Heroes program on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Charlotte Police and Fire Training Academy.

 

“Wills for Heroes,” states YLD Chair Roberta King in her upcoming column for North Carolina Lawyer, “remains one of the YLD’s most visible and successful public service programs.”

 

Indeed it is, from the first Wills for Heroes program at this very location in October 2007 to the latest installment in Charlotte, which marked the 15th time the YLD has provided free estate planning documents for grateful first responders and their spouses.

 

“The event ran very smoothly,” stated Jake Epstein, who serves as co-chair of the YLD’s Wills for Heroes Committee along with Jillian Brevorka. “Ninety volunteers assisted 175 first responders and their spouses by drafting approximately 510 documents.”

 

Through 15 Wills for Heroes programs, 7,387 documents have been prepared for more than 2,500 first responders and their spouses. Approximately 850 volunteers – attorneys, paralegals, notaries public, law students and others – have participated in the programs, and a good number of them have worked multiple events.

 

One of the most endearing aspects of this program is the fact that the YLD never rests on its laurels, even though credit for a job well done is richly deserved. Instead, volunteer leadership sets about the task of nailing down the details of the next program and puts out the call for volunteers, who always respond enthusiastically.

 

To wit, the NCBA YLD is going to hold its next Wills for Heroes event in Hickory on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (the last appointment will be scheduled for 4 p.m.) at the Business and Industrial Complex of Catawba Valley Community College, which is located between the Main and East campuses of CVCC at 2664 U.S. Highway 70 SE, Hickory.
