Details Finalized For 4th Annual 4ALL Statewide Service Day

Article Date: Tuesday, February 15, 2011

PLEASE CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER ON FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 2011

N.C. lawyers will give freely of their time and talent on Friday, March 4, 2011, as participants in the North Carolina Bar Association’s fourth annual 4ALL Statewide Service Day. Volunteer attorneys will provide free legal information from seven call centers across the state from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Toll-free numbers will be provided through the auspices of five N.C. TV stations that are sponsoring call centers: WLOS News 13 in Asheville; WBTV News 3 in Charlotte; WFMY News 2 in Greensboro (hosted by The Volunteer Center); WRAL-TV 5 in Raleigh; and WNCT-TV 9 in Greenville.

A sixth call center will be hosted in Wilmington by the Williams Mullen law firm.

The Spanish-language call center will be hosted by the North Carolina Bar Association in Cary.

Citizens in all 100 North Carolina counties are encouraged to participate through a network of seven toll-free phone numbers directed toward call centers in Asheville, Cary, Charlotte, Greensboro, Greenville, Raleigh and Wilmington.

N.C. residents who reside in the viewing area of the television stations are encouraged to access those toll-free numbers and view coverage of the event throughout the day.

Members of the public are reminded they can call any of the toll free numbers in any part of the state, which can be especially helpful if volume is especially heavy at one or more call centers. Also, please note that personal visits are not permitted and calls to the call center’s normal phone numbers cannot be transferred.

Here is the call center information, which will be posted on the homepage of the NCBA website, www.ncbar.org, throughout Statewide Service Day:

ASHEVILLE: Western North Carolina and the Asheville area will be served by WLOS News 13 in Asheville. The toll-free number is 800-289-0013.

Debra Foster and Gray Styers are serving as co-chairs of the 4ALL Task Force and the Participate Working Group for 2010-11.

The call-center site chairs are Sharon Robertson and Susan Dotson-Smith (Asheville); Trey Lindley and Danny Merlin (Charlotte); Scott Adams, Parrish Peddrick and Stephanie Roberts (Greensboro); Stephanie Crosby and Leslie Van Der Have (Greenville); Jason Pfister and Dan Hartzog Jr. (Raleigh); Ryan Rhodenhiser, Andy McVey and Jill Raspet (Wilmington); and Terrence McEnally III (Cary).

The statewide public service project coincides with the NCBA’s 4ALL campaign to provide civil legal aid to the poor. The event also marks the official launch of a new pro bono program, Call 4ALL, that will provide attorneys the chance to help a pre-screened client in one of several areas of law: private landlord/tenant, public and subsidized housing, Medicaid, consumer, and employment security.

Call 4ALL volunteers typically will work with clients through monthly or weekly one-hour telephone interviews to provide advice or discrete services to pre-screened clients of Legal Aid of North Carolina.
