The North Carolina Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division hosted the Legal LINK program for a diverse group of sophomores at Northern Durham High School on Friday, Feb. 3. The inaugural LINK (Leadership, Information, Networking and Knowledge) session attracted 11 students who heard from a collection of four speakers on the topic of leadership – NCBA Past-President Charles Becton, N.C. Supreme Court Justice Barbara Jackson, Campbell School of Law’s Vice Dean Keith Faulkner former Northern Durham teacher turned attorney James Hash.

The program was established to inform a diverse group of high school students about law school and the legal profession as well as to encourage them to think of the legal profession as a viable career option. The NCBA YLD is using the program to compete in the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division’s Next Steps challenge competition.

Becton spoke about leading in the classroom, and specifically about not making excuses and to “get off your ‘buts’ and lead” instead. Vice Dean Faulkner spoke about leading by example and Justice Jackson described tips for leading by doing. Hash was tasked with providing the students their week one challenge of finding something in your life that you have a passion for.

A group of law school volunteers were also present, led by Legal LINK Committee Chair Deyaska Spencer, from North Carolina Central University, who introduced the program and the panel. Also volunteering from NCCU School of Law were Iyanna Henry, Jerel Johnson and Tyrone McClean. Volunteer Brooks Jaffa represented the UNC School of Law.

Friday’s program was the first of four one-hour sessions scheduled at Northern Durham High School. Students must attend all four sessions to complete the Legal LINK curriculum.
