NCBA Releases Statement Regarding Campaign Ads

Article Date: Wednesday, April 30, 2014

The NCBA Board of Govenors released the following statement on April 30:

Election season is upon us, and with it has come negative campaign advertising targeting officers of the court. As an organization that serves the public and the profession, the North Carolina Bar Association respects and defends the right to free speech guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and the North Carolina Constitution, particularly in the interest of political campaigns. We do not, however, condone advertising and commentary that unfairly attack those seeking elective office based on the performance of their duties as officers of the court.

Justices, judges, district attorneys and private practitioners execute their duties according to the rule of law under the strictest codes of ethics and professionalism. It is imperative that we respect the positions they hold within this priceless system of justice upon which our democracy rests.
