Description:Abraham Lincoln once
said, "As a peacemaker the lawyer has superior opportunity of being
a good man [person]. There will still be business
enough."
Lincoln on Professionalism was created by the Atlanta
Bar Association in partnership with the Chief Justice's Commission
on Professionalism in Georgia in celebration of the 200th
Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birthday. Using an engaging
documentary‐style format, the program presents ten vignettes that
contain the writings of Abraham Lincoln to create a
documentary‐style program on professionalism. The exemplary
qualities of legal and personal professionalism Lincoln
demonstrated day in and day out in his law practice are presented
in the slides, readings and contemporary commentary that comprise
the program. The vignettes provide comment and conclusion on the
following in the practice of law …
Lack of Vanity • Candor with the
Court • Justice and Fairness • Candor to Opposing Counsel • Dignity
and Civility • Courtesy and Goodwill • Brevity and Clarity • Candor
to Client • Diligence
Examples of Lincoln's writings include:
"Resolve to be honest at
all events, and if in your own judgment you cannot be an honest
lawyer, resolve to be honest without being a lawyer."
"Never stir up litigation. A
worse man can scarcely be found who does this. A moral tone ought
to be infused into the profession which should drive such men
out of it."
"[Diligence is the] leading rule
for the lawyer, as for the man of every other profession. Leave
nothing for tomorrow which can be done today."
Lincoln on Professionalism contains ten
vignettes. The "documentary" is coupled with a Chat
Room discussion with a live Moderator for attendees to explore
a current context for the model of professionalism offered by
Abraham Lincoln's life and practice. In the Chat Room attendees are
asked to focus on the issues presented as they might relate to
the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct.
