Effective 1/1/11 by the NC State Bar 

"All active members admitted to the North Carolina State Bar after January 1, 2011 must complete the North Carolina Bar New Admittee Professionalism Program in the year the member is first required to meet the continuing legal education requirements." Rule .1518 (c)

STEP 1: Take NAPP*: For 2012 program dates, see below.

The New Admittee Professionalism Program (NAPP) is a two-day, 12-hour mandatory CLE program designed to give newly licensed attorneys a greater understanding of law practice management, trust accounts, State Bar rules and requirements, ethical violations and the grievance process and professionalism.

*Course required to be completed by:
  • 12/31/2012 for those who pass the February 2012 Bar exam
  • 12/31/2012 for those who pass the July 2011 Bar exam 
  • 12/31/2013 for those who pass the July 2012 Bar exam

[NOTE: The State Bar requires attendance at a live/video replay program and the completion of a written evaluation of the program in order to receive CLE credit.]

**Exemptions from Professionalism Requirement for New Members Rule .1518 (d)
(1)  Licensed in Another Jurisdiction. A member who is licensed by a United States jurisdiction other than North Carolina for five or more years prior to admission to practice in North Carolina is exempt from the New Admittee Program requirement and must notify the board of this exemption in the first annual report sent to the member.

(2)  Inactive Status. A newly admitted member who is transferred to inactive status in the first year of admission to the State Bar is exempt from the New Admittee Program requirement but, upon the entry of an order transferring the member back to active status, must complete the New Admittee Program in the year that the member is subject to the requirements.
