NC LEAP BECOMES REALITY FOR LOW-INCOME N.C. BUSINESS OWNERS
Following years of planning, NC LEAP will soon be open for business. NC LEAP, or the North Carolina Lawyers for Entrepreneurs Assistance Program, is a collaborative project of the North Carolina Bar Association and the NCBA Foundation with the NCBA’s Business Law and Corporate Counsel sections. The program provides low-wealth, small business owners with legal assistance in starting or growing their businesses by matching clients with pro bono attorneys. The official ribbon-cutting for NC LEAP is slated for 10:30 a.m. on June 4 at the Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship in Greensboro.

LAW SCHOOL GRADS REJECT LARGE FIRMS FOR SUMMER JOBS
While most law school graduates continue to accept jobs in the private sector, the percentage of jobs at large, private firms has decreased each year since the class of 2001. The percentage of jobs accepted in firms with 101 attorneys or more has fallen from 42.6 percent in 2001 to 37.3 percent in 2005, according to Washington-based NALP, a nonprofit organization that tracks legal employment. Concerned by large firms’ increasing billable-hour requirements and high attrition rates, many students are opting to choose smaller firms or the public interest sector for summer jobs.

MOBILE TIME ENTRY PROMOTES ACCURACY, CREDIBILITY
According to ILTA’s 2006 Technology Survey, aggregrate usage of PDAs at large firms is 74 percent, but only five percent of firms offer attorneys a mobile version of a core application, time entry. Although most lawyers view time entry as a burden, it is also recognized as an important way to communicate and build credibility with clients. Time entries are the most consistent form of detailed update to clients and can help track progress on a case, remember communications between parties and itemize value. Several mobile time capture systems are available to record activity at the moment it occurs.
