NCBA OBSERVING “4ALL” FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION The NCBA is observing a “4ALL” Fourth of July this year as it launches a yearlong campaign to improve access to legal services for North Carolina’s poor. The centerpiece of Janet Ward Black’s presidential agenda for 2007-08, the 4ALL launch is accompanied by the establishment of a new Web presence at www.4allnc.org and an array of new resources devoted to the four focal points of the 4ALL campaign: Educate, Legislate, Donate and Participate. http://www.ncbar.org/news/1/2348/index.aspx
HICKORY LAWYER CHARLIE DIXON CONTRIBUTES $100,000 TO LANC FUND The NCBA Foundation’s newly established Legal Aid of North Carolina Fund received a monumental shot in the arm recently when Hickory attorney Charles D. “Charlie” Dixon stepped forward to contribute $100,000. A 2003 General Practice Hall of Fame inductee, Dixon was recognized by the NCBA Board of Governors at last month’s Annual Meeting in Asheville. The LANC Fund, which includes a charitable contribution option on the current NCBA dues statement, has been established in conjunction with the NCBA’s “4ALL” initiative. IN MEMORIAM It is the sad duty of the North Carolina Bar Association to notify the membership of the death of Richard A. “Rick” Leonard of Raleigh, 60, who died June 25. Access the link below for additional information. http://www.ncbar.org/news/1/2332/index.aspx
CITIZEN LAWYERS ARE GONE, BUT THEY HAVEN’T BEEN FORGOTTEN Citizen Lawyers commanded center stage at the recent NCBA Annual Meeting, not only in their presence at the General Session but also throughout the Grove Park Inn, where impressive posters denoted the contributions of each honored NCBA Citizen Lawyer. As a pleasant reminder to those who attended, and as a first look for those who didn’t, the posters have been replicated for display on the NCBA Web site and are accessible via the link below. http://www.ncbar.org/news/1/2332/index.aspx
BAR NEWS FROM ACROSS THE STATE New leadership has been installed for 2007-08 and elected for the following year by the N.C. Academy of Trial Lawyers (click here), the N.C. Association of Defense Attorneys (click here) and Legal Aid of North Carolina (click here). In addition, NCADA commemorated its 30th anniversary with a fitting tribute to founding members J. Robert Elster, who died May 15, and William K. Davis; access the link below for more. http://www.ncada.org/pdf/Elster%20Davis%20Award%20Press%20Release.pdf
WEB SITE OF THE WEEK The “4ALL” Web site will serve as a virtual clearinghouse for all matters pertaining to this important initiative, the focal point of which is to expand the provision of legal services to the poor in North Carolina. Please take a look at the new site, bookmark it and return often as developments relative to the 4ALL campaign are posted. www.4allnc.org
