ABA PROPOSAL WOULD TIGHTEN BAR PASSAGE RATE STANDARDS Law schools will fall under greater pressure to graduate students who are capable of passing the bar exam under proposed changes to the ABA’s accreditation standards. Drafted by the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar’s Accreditation Policy Task Force, the proposal will come before the House of Delegates in San Francisco during the 129th ABA Annual Meeting (Aug. 9-14). The ABA has been under increased pressure from the Department of Education which grants the ABA authority to accredit law schools. IN MEMORIAM It is the sad duty of the North Carolina Bar Association to notify the membership of the recent deaths of three legal professionals. Retired Chief District Court Judge Lowry M. Betts, 76, of District 15-B (Chatham/Orange) died Monday. Services are scheduled Friday, July 13, at 11 a.m. at Pittsboro Presbyterian Church. In Memoriam also notes the deaths of Thomas G. AOC RELOCATES FROM FIVE BUILDINGS TO N.C. JUDICIAL CENTER For the first time, more than 400 employees of the N.C. Administrative Office of the Courts will be under one roof, thanks to its ongoing move into the 180,000-square-foot West Raleigh facility that previously served as Nortel’s training center. The move from five different area buildings to the new N.C. Judicial Center is a work in progress for AOC Director Ralph Walker, who along with several departments has already relocated.
