BONNIE WEYHER TAPPED FOR FUTURE SERVICE AS STATE BAR PRESIDENT
Barbara B. “Bonnie” Weyher is not only a former chair of the NCBA Litigation Section, she’s also a future president of the N.C. State Bar. The Raleigh attorney was nominated last week to serve as vice president of the State Bar in 2007-08, thereby placing her on a three-year leadership track in which she would serve as president in 2009-10. Hank Hankins is set to succeed President Steve Michael this October, at which time John McMillan will become president-elect and Weyher will take office as vice president.

IN MEMORIAM
John B. Yorke, founding vice chair of the NCBA Corporate Counsel Section who later served as section chair in 1991-92, died Tuesday following a lengthy battle with cancer. The 53-year-old Charlotte lawyer was a partner with Helms Mulliss Whicker; click here to access a tribute on the firm’s Web site. Arrangements will be added to In Memoriam when completed. The NCBA has also been notified of the recent death of longtime Asheville attorney Walter Raleigh McGuire, 93, who died July 8. The senior partner of McGuire, Wood & Bissette from 1969 until his retirement in 1998, McGuire served on the N.C. Board of Law Examiners from 1972-81.

LEGAL AID OF NORTH CAROLINA GAINING GROUND ON SEVERAL FRONTS
Five years ago when it became Legal Aid of North Carolina, “You’re Red Hot” was the promotional theme. But never in its 30 years of existence has LANC been hotter than it is right now, thanks in no small part to the efforts of NCBA President Janet Ward Black. News 14 Carolina and the Salisbury Post recently provided coverage of the NCBA’s 4ALL campaign, and LANC just announced a $1 million Triangle-area fund-raising drive co-chaired by A.P. Carlton and Willis Whichard. Access the link below for more.

OPTIONS ABOUND FOR NCBA MEMBERS TO HELP BUILD THE LANC FUND
Speaking of the LANC Fund, gifts from NCBA members have boosted the fund above $130,000. Response to the member dues statement’s charitable option has been very good. Please make your LANC Fund gift when paying your NCBA dues, and also consider additional tax-free gifts from highly appreciated securities that can build the LANC Fund. A third giving option to consider is the Pension Protection Act of 2006 – currently set to expire Dec. 31, 2007 – which also allows tax-free transfer of IRA account assets to charities by those at least 70.5 years of age.
