MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW FOR OCT. 12 CIVIL ACCESS SUMMIT The Summit on Civil Access to Justice in North Carolina, a historic gathering of stakeholders in the state’s judicial system sponsored by the N.C. Equal Access to Justice Commission, chaired by Chief Justice Sarah Parker, and the NCBA, will take place on Friday, Oct. 12. The event, which parallels the NCBA’s ongoing 4ALL initiative and President Janet Ward Black’s commitment to providing civil legal services to the poor, will take place at One Eleven Place, located at 111 Realtor’s Way in Cary between the N.C. Bar Center and Harrison Avenue. Gene Nichol, former dean of the UNC School of Law who now serves as president of The College of William & Mary, headlines an impressive agenda as the event’s keynote speaker. Access the link below for details. http://www.ncbar.org/news/1/2623/index.aspx
YLD GARNERS HONORS, GEARS UP TO HOST ABA FALL CONFERENCE The NCBA’s Young Lawyers Division stood tall at the recent ABA-YLD Annual Meeting in San Francisco, earning recognition for its efforts in 2006-07 and its role in hosting the upcoming ABA-YLD Fall Conference in Charlotte (Oct. 4-6, 2007). Two projects garnered first-place recognition: “When Duty Calls” and the CLE program “Politics and Professionalism: The Lawyer Legislator.” See next week’s e-bar for more, but time is of the essence if you want to beat the Sept. 3 deadline to register for the Fall Conference for only $49. Direct your questions to ABA Dist. 9 Networking Chair Kirk Bradley or Host Committee Chair Ward Davis, or access the link below to register for the first ABA national conference ever held in North Carolina. http://www.abanet.org/yld/fall07

TOM LAMBETH FILLS DISTRICT COURT VACANCY IN ALAMANCE COUNTY The tenure of NCBA member Tom Lambeth as deputy counsel to the State Bar was a brief one. That’s because David Thomas “Tom” Lambeth Jr., a longtime Burlington attorney and former chair of the Alamance-Burlington Board of Education, has been appointed by Gov. Easley to the District Court bench in District 15A. Lambeth, who began his duties with the State Bar earlier this year, returns to Alamance County to fill the vacancy created with the retirement of Judge Ernest Harviel. http://www.thetimesnews.com/news/lambeth_4720___article.html/judge_court.html
