NCBA’S NEW 100% CLUB LISTS 18 CHARTER MEMBERS The NCBA’s new 100% Club already has 18 members and will no doubt continue to grow. The Membership Department’s new recognition program is open to law firms, legal departments and legal organizations with five or more attorneys, all of whom must be members of the NCBA. The 100% Club has its own homepage, accessible via the link below, which will include a listing of all Charter Members who join before the deadline of Dec. 31, 2007. STEVE CRIHFIELD ELECTED PRESIDENT OF BARCARES Steve Crihfield of Greensboro was recently elected president of BarCARES of North Carolina, which was incorporated in 1999 as a separate nonprofit subsidiary of the NCBA to market the BarCARES program to bar groups across the state and to monitor existing programs. Crihfield succeeds Steve Coggins of Wilmington. Also elected for 2007-08 were Robert Hunter Jr. of Greensboro (1st VP); John Bowman of Durham, Lawson Brown of Burlington and Charles Coppage of Kill Devil Hills (VPs); Alisa Huffman of Raleigh (secretary); and NCBA Executive Director Allan Head (treasurer). http://www.ncbar.org/news/1/2639/index.aspx
IN MEMORIAM The NCBA has learned of the death of Don H. Elkins, 68, of Hendersonville. Elkins, who died Sept. 8, began practicing law in Henderson County in 1971 and served for many years as county attorney. http://www.ncbar.org/membership/memoriam/index.aspx
FREE SEPT. 28 SEMINAR FOCUSES ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT NCBA members are invited to attend a free symposium on Friday, Sept. 28, sponsored by the NCBA’s Environment, Energy & Natural Resources Law Section. “Sustainable Development in North Carolina: At Home, At Work, In Our Communities, In Our State – What You Can Do – What Others Are Doing” begins at 1 p.m. at the N.C. Bar Center and features an outstanding list of speakers. The program is designed to raise public awareness about one of the most important issues facing our state. HEALTH CARE POWER OF ATTORNEY HEADLINES OCTOBER CLE House Bill 634 is the featured topic for the CLE program “End-of-Life Planning: New Living Will, Health Care Power of Attorney and Organ Donation Statutes,” slated Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the N.C. Bar Center. Sponsored by the N.C. Medical Society and the NCBA’s Elder Law, Estate Planning and Health Law Sections, the program explains the new Advance Directives/Health Care Power of Attorney measure that rewrites North Carolina’s living wills and health care power of attorney statutes and forms. Program discussion also includes House Bill 1372, a measure establishing new rules for organ donation.
