JUSTICE GINSBURG PROVIDES IMPRESSIVE “VIEW FROM THE BENCH” Last week’s “Changing Face of Justice: A View from the Bench” was a resounding success, thanks first and foremost to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court. The two-day event, conducted by the NCBA and its Women in the Profession Committee, played to capacity crowds both days. In addition to Ginsburg’s tireless efforts, special notice is extended to the sponsors who made the event possible and the attendees who made it worthwhile. Click here for coverage from the Asheville Citizen-Times; access the link below for story and photos on the NCBA Web site. http://www.ncbar.org/news/1/2742/index.aspx
NC SUPREME COURT ORDERS MANDATORY IOLTA PROGRAM The N.C. Supreme Court issued an order to the State Bar on Oct. 11 to implement a comprehensive (mandatory) IOLTA program for lawyers in North Carolina, effective Jan. 1, 2008. All active members of the State Bar who maintain general client trust accounts in N.C. must ensure that all of their general client trust accounts are established as interest-bearing IOLTA accounts. Under revised rules governing the NC IOLTA program (approved by the State Bar Council Oct. 19 to be published for comment), lawyers must certify annually when paying their State Bar dues – either by returning the Dues Notice form or electronically – that all general client trust accounts maintained by the lawyer/law firm are IOLTA accounts. Lawyers must be in compliance no later than June 30, 2008. Access the link below for more. www.ncbar.gov
IN MEMORIAM The North Carolina Bar Association has learned of the death of William Ira Ward Jr. of Davidson, 86, who died Oct. 7 in Wilmington. Access the link below for additional information. The NCBA also extends its deepest sympathies to Robert Kornegay Jr., a member of the Family Law and GP, Small Firm and Solo sections. Kornegay’s wife, Debbie, was slain last week in Rocky Mount while serving her community as the coordinator of its Meals on Wheels program. http://www.ncbar.org/membership/memoriam/index.aspx
CONFIRMATION HEARING SET WEDNESDAY FOR TOM SCHROEDER The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a confirmation hearing for Winston-Salem attorney Thomas D. Schroeder this Wednesday. Schroeder was nominated by President Bush on Jan. 9 to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of N.C. Also, Gov. Easley has appointed another NCBA member, District Court Judge Douglas “Doug” Bryon Sasser Sr., to the Superior Court in District 13A (Bladen and Columbus counties). Access the link below for more on Judge Sasser. http://www.lelandtribune.com/politicsgovt.asp?dismode=article&artid=288
NCBA MEMBERS ACCEPT HONOR FROM MEDICAL SOCIETY The N.C. Medical Society honored NCBA members James E. Creamer Jr. and E. Knox Proctor V last week for their successful efforts in improving the state’s advanced directive laws. Both recipients insist, however, that they were merely accepting the recognition on behalf of the NCBA, especially its Elder Law, Estate Planning & Fiduciary Law and Health Law sections. Presentation of the John Huske Anderson Award took place Saturday night at the NCMS Annual Meeting in Charlotte. Outgoing NCMS President Darlyne Menscer presented the award. http://www.ncbar.org/news/1/2741/index.aspx
