PAST-PRESIDENT DEWEY WELLS HONORED FOR CONSERVATION EFFORTS
NCBA Past-President Dewey Wells has been awarded the state’s highest civilian honor – the Order of the Long Leaf Pine – for 35 years of volunteer efforts on behalf of nature conservation, including 20 years on the Board of Trustees of the N.C. National Heritage Trust Fund. A Blowing Rock resident who practices with Womble Carlyle in Winston-Salem, Wells helped establish the trust fund in 1987. He served as president of the NCBA in 1980-81 while residing in Elizabeth City, where he practiced for 27 years. IN MEMORIAM
Stephen P. Millikin, 81, and Judge Richard Brown Allsbrook, 78, two icons of the legal profession who traced their lifelong friendship back to their Halifax County roots, have died. Allsbrook, a former NCBA vice president who served as Resident Superior Court Judge for the Sixth Judicial District from 1978-2000, died Friday; services were held Monday in Roanoke Rapids. Millikin, 81, died Monday in Greensboro, where services will take place this week. Visitation is scheduled Wednesday evening from 5:30-7:30 at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, 515 N. Elm St.; the funeral will take place Thursday at 2 p.m. at the West Market Street Methodist Church. Access the link below for additional information.

WAKE HAS NEW CHIEF DISTRICT COURT JUDGE STARTING THURSDAY
Veteran District Court Judge Robert Rader has been named to succeed Joyce “Joy” Hamilton as Chief District Court Judge for Wake County, Chief Justice Sarah Parker announced Tuesday. Hamilton, who became the first woman elected to serve as judge in Wake County in 1986, is retiring Wednesday. In a related matter, District Court Judge Joe Buckner of Orange and Chatham counties, a speaker at Chief Justice Parker’s recent Summit on Civil Access to Justice in N.C., has been elected president of the N.C.
