PLAN NOW FOR 2008 NCBA ANNUAL MEETING VACATION IN JUNE The time is now to book your room reservations for the 2008 NCBA Annual Meeting at the Sheraton Atlantic Beach Oceanfront Hotel (1-800-624-8875). The deeply discounted $155 room rate for the June 19-22 annual meeting should sell out fast, as it did in 2006. Atlantic Beach will be campaign central this election year with candidates for the U.S. Senate, governor and the appellate courts invited to address the General Session on Saturday, June 21. The family dinner at the N.C. Aquarium, which sold out quickly two years ago, promises to be a popular kickoff event on Thursday evening, June 19. Be on the lookout for online registration in March and plan now to attend your annual meeting. http://www.sheratonatlanticbeach.com/

CHRISTINE MUMMA IS HONORED AS TAR HEEL OF THE YEAR The News and Observer’s Tar Heel of the Year is Christine Mumma of Durham who directs the Chief Justice’s Center on Actual Innocence. The coveted honor is neither the first time this NCBA member has been recognized for her efforts nor is it likely to be the last. Mumma was the 2005 recipient of the William L. Thorp Award, presented annually by the NCBA to the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. She has served the commission without compensation since it was established in 2002 by then-Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake Jr. http://www.newsobserver.com/news/tarheel_year/story/852638.html
