GENE NICHOL, WILLIAM & MARY PRESIDENT, RESIGNS Gene Nichol has resigned, effective immediately, as president of the College of William & Mary. Nichol, former dean of the UNC School of Law, outlined the reasons for his decision in a statement to the William & Mary community accessible via the link below. Law School Dean Taylor Reveley, the featured professionalism speaker at last year’s NCBA Annual Meeting, will serve as interim president. MEDIATOR PARENT COLLEXIS ACQUIRES CASEMAKER (LAWRITER) Collexis Holdings, Inc., the parent company of the NCBA’s newest member benefit, Mediator™, has acquired Casemaker, the online legal research library that has been an NCBA member benefit since 2001. The acquisition of Lawriter LLC, which developed Casemaker in 1998 along with the Ohio State Bar Association, was announced Feb. 4. IN MEMORIAM The NCBA has learned of the deaths of two members. Wilmington attorney Karen L. Simmons, 52, died Sunday. The auto-related death, which occurred in Craven County, was attributed to Sunday’s high winds. Elizabeth Rollins of Greensboro, 82, died Monday. A memorial service for Rollins, who served as the first clerk and solicitor of the Guilford County Domestic Relations Court from 1954-56, is scheduled Sunday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. in Greensboro. PUSH IS ON TO SECURE STATEWIDE SERVICE DAY PARTICIPANTS The NCBA’s Statewide Service Day, scheduled Friday, April 4, is rounding into form as call centers in eight North Carolina cities are almost finalized, toll-free numbers are being determined and marketing efforts are under way. Simply stated, the 4ALL Task Force and its Participate Working Group needs lawyers to volunteer, and the best time to do so is now. NCBA EXCHANGE WITH ARGENTINA SCHEDULED JUNE 6-15 The NCBA will undertake its second attorney exchange program this year. A delegation of N.C. attorneys will visit Argentina June 6-15 followed by a return visit by Argentina’s delegation in 2009. NCBA members who are interested in joining the N.C. delegation are urged to return an application, accessible via the link below, by Feb. 22. There will be an NCBA subsidy of approximately $1,000 per member delegate and up to $100 for International Law & Practice Section members. We also expect to provide some CLE credit for around $75. The itinerary and other information will be provided to respondents as it becomes available. The 2008 filing period for local, state and congressional offices opened Monday and will remain open until noon on Friday, Feb. 29.
