LPM Position

 

Job Purpose:  To administer a comprehensive Law Office Management Assistance Program (LOMAP) that will provide confidential advice and assistance to members in areas including but not limited to business planning, personnel, facilities, operations and information technology management.

 

Job Responsibilities

Primary Functions

·        Implement a comprehensive LOMAP designed to assist lawyers and legal professionals in improving the efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of legal services.

·        Monitor law office management communication tools (e.g., forums, LISTSERV, website, etc.) to provide timely, informative, advice and assistance on practice management to members.

·        Help communicate and market the range of NCBA/F services and resources available to members by (i) presenting this information to law offices, (ii) attending local bar association events, and (iii) using communication tools to “get the word out” (e.g., forums, LISTSERV, website, blogs, etc.).

·        Help law firms improve their law office management procedures by (i) providing a law practice, office, and technology management self-assessment checklist and (ii) creating and maintaining a network of professional resources involved in all aspects of law practice and office management to whom the NCBA/F can refer members when necessary.

·        Create and maintain a list of technology consultants and providers for referral to members.  Manage the Technology Assistance Program to offer members the most extensive array of technology solutions, and help them make informed technology-decisions.

·        Manage the LOMAP program by working with the Law Practice Management Section, Membership Committee and Technology Advisory Committee (TAC) to conduct strategic planning, financial and budget planning and monitoring, program growth and expansion, and new product and service development.

·        Work with the Membership Committee and TAC to (i) identify new technology services and business service providers for the NCBA to provide to members; (ii) provide members with product evaluations that will enable them to make wise choices from the wide array of technology solutions available; and (iii) identify and communicate developments in technology that raise special issues or risks for lawyers.

·        Work with the Law Practice Management Section and Legal Assistants Division to develop law practice management resources and programs.  Provide information to lawyers about the availability of tools and training, including new sources of information about technology, continuing legal education (CLE), practice management, electronic communications, and law-related resources and links.

·        Develop a strategic plan that ensures the NCBA/F is responsive to members’ needs and takes advantage of the best technology and law practice management tools available to improve service to members and the public; and provides practice management and client service solutions to members.

·        Help members understand their own need for training; seek innovative ways of bringing new technologies, law practice management tools, services, and risks to members’ awareness to promote a culture of continuous learning and adaptation to change among members.

·        Develop and.collect materials to aid firms in managing large-scale firm changes such as retirement, mergers, dissolutions or the sudden death or disability of a solo practitioner. Work with the Senior Lawyers Division and General Practice section on these initiatives.

·        Create, monitor and maintain the LOMAP and Small Firm and Solo Practitioner pages on the NCBA/F website (www.ncbar.org).

 

Secondary Functions

·        Assist the Law Practice Management Section, Membership Committee, Legal Assistants Division and TAC, as required.

·        Work with the CLE department and others in developing and presenting practice management and law office management programs including training in the use of technologies with law office applications (e.g., e-filing).

·        Write articles for NCBA/F publications and assist in the development of materials pertaining to law practice management issues.

·        Review and evaluate materials to identify appropriate reference items for future anticipated needs.

 

Job Skills or Qualifications

Required

·        Degree in business management or related field or prior experience in law firm management or law office management consulting.

·        Thorough knowledge of all aspects of law practice management including advanced business practices, office management, personnel management, risk management, and the use of evolving technologies in the practice of law.

·        Familiarity with current information technology hardware (e.g., computers, networks, telecommunication systems, printers, copiers, etc.) and software (e.g., computer, network, & web-based programs) solutions for efficient law office management.

·        Ability to establish and maintain confidential relationships.

·        Ability to think logically and solve problems.

·        Strong verbal and written communication skills.

·        Strong customer service skills.

·        Strong presentation skills and an acumen using PowerPoint.

 

Desirable

·        Advanced degree - MBA or JD.

·        Prior experience in technology management or consulting.

·        Management and/or supervisory experience.

·        Experience in developing and managing budgets.

·        Understanding of Trust Account record keeping.

·        Organizational skills.

·        Positive work ethic and attitude.
