2007 NCBA Annual Meeting

The North Carolina Bar Association returns to Asheville and the historic Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa this summer for the association’s 109th Annual Meeting.
Festivities are scheduled Thursday through Sunday, June 21-24.

Room reservations, of course, are handled separately from the event registration process that will be transacted through the NCBA.
Annual Meeting highlights will include swearing-in ceremonies for the NCBA’s 113th president, Janet Ward Black of Greensboro, who will accept the presidential gavel from D. Clark Smith Jr. of Lexington on Saturday evening, June 23.
The election of a new president-elect who will lead the NCBA in 2008-09 will transpire earlier in the day during the General Session. N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Sarah Parker will provide the annual State of the Judiciary address during this time.
The NCBA is proud to announce that three special guests have committed to attend and address the Annual Meeting, including N.Y. Gov. Eliot Spitzer who will also appear on the General Session program.
Dr. Kathy Reichs, a noted author, professor and forensic anthropologist, will be the featured speaker during Saturday’s Carolina BBQ Luncheon.
Friday’s impressive agenda features the 20th Annual Willis Smith and Willis Smith Jr. Professionalism and Ethics Speech which will be presented during the President’s Luncheon. The 2007 Pro Bono Service Awards will be presented during this event as well.
Dean Taylor Reveley of the William and Mary School of Law is this year’s professionalism speaker, marking yet another in a long list of outstanding individuals and groups who have appeared at the Annual Meeting through the generosity of the Willis Smith and Willis Smith Jr. Justice Fund.
Thursday’s General Practice Hall of Fame induction ceremony kicks off the Annual Meeting’s awards agenda, followed on Friday by the President’s Luncheon during which the 2007 Pro Bono Awards will be presented. The second H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award will also be presented to NCBA Past-President E. Osborne “Ozzie” Ayscue Jr. of Charlotte during this event.
The NCBA’s highest honor, the Judge John J. Parker Memorial Award, and the Dr. I. Beverly Lake Sr. Public Service Award, will be presented during Saturday's General Session. Former N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Henry E. Frye of Greensboro will receive the Parker Award while NCBA Past-President Jim Maxwell of Durham will become the third recipient of the Lake Award.
The General Session will also include special recognition of a number of North Carolina’s leading citizen lawyers. YLD awards will be presented during its divisional annual meeting Saturday afternoon.
