The Foundation Endowment was formed in 1987 with the Founders Campaign that raised over $1.5 million under the leadership of Winston-Salem attorney, William F. Womble. In 1991, the Builders Campaign raised an additional $350,000. Through the leadership of James D. Blount, Jr of Raleigh, the Centennial Endowment Campaign raised over $1.6 million in 1999-2001, boosting the Foundation Endowment to more than $5 million.
