  1. Retitle your receptionist position to "Manager of First & Last Impressions" and select, treat and train her/him accordingly. Your marketing success rate will soar!
  2. Streamline your internet searches via Dogpile.com, a multisearch engine. Dogpile searches most the major search engines with just one search request. (e.g. Yahoo, Magellan, Lycos, AltaVista, etc.). Try it, you'll love this dogpile!
  3. Backup your computers regularly and store backups in a fireproof safe or file cabinet or away from the office in a secure location (e.g. safe deposit box).
  4. Check your computer backups often to make sure they contain what you think they do and to ensure complete data restoration if needed (heaven forbid!).
  5. Never miss a good opportunity to shut up!
  6. Make sure your office "queen bees" aren't really killer bees. The ongoing and far reaching damages caused by lousy-attitude employees and trouble-stirrer upper-types usually outweigh the benefits of their legal skills. Attitudes are indeed contagious and it's a good idea for us to ask ourselves often if our attitudes are worth catching!
  7. Sign up for free notification and abstracts of helpful law firm management articles at www.ljx.com/lawfirmmanagement/express.
  8. When gathering the information needed to check for conflicts of interest, don't forget to ask for other names parties may have used in the past (marital, maiden names, etc.).
  9. Everyone loves cash bonuses, but look for other, more creative ways to motivate and reward performance excellence (dinner for two gift certificates, extra time off, handwritten thank you notes, remembering to say "thank you" more often). Don't let your employees be among those who complain "When I'm right who remembers and when I'm wrong who forgets!?!?!"
  10. Track your referral sources carefully and appropriately thank individuals who have referred clients to you.
  11. We expect our doctors to stay up to date in their respective fields and clients demand the same from their attorneys. Learn to use technology to your advantage and mark your calendars for May 14 & 15, 1998 to attend the N.C. Bar Association's Legal Technology Expo at the Greensboro Coliseum! Earn CLE credit, network with hundreds of your peers and go home armed with state of the art technology tips and information.
  12. Laugh often and learn to laugh at yourself ("Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall be forever amused"). While it may be a bit challenging to figure out just what is appropriate humor these days, a good sense of humor remains one of our best "tools" for keeping a balanced and healthy perspective in an often unbalanced world.
  13. "Yesterday is a canceled check. Tomorrow is only a promissory note. Today is the only cash I have so I had best spend it wisely!"
