Fourth Evelyn Coman Award Presented

 From left, Ann and Dudley Humphrey pose with Joe Moss and Steve Pharr of the Construction Law Section. | Winston-Salem attorney Dudley Humphrey, former president of the N.C. State Bar, is the fourth recipient of the Evelyn M. Coman Award for Distinguished Service in the Field of Construction Law.
The award was presented Saturday, Sept. 30, in conjunction with the North Carolina Bar Association Construction Law Section’s annual meeting in Greensboro.
Section Chair Joe Moss and Steve Pharr, a past chair who nominated Humphrey, participated in the presentation ceremony along with Humphrey and his wife, Ann.
The Coman Award, established in 2002 and later named in memory of the Construction Law Section=s 1993-94 chair, is presented by the section on as-merited basis. Evelyn Coman, a Durham attorney, was also a founding member of the section.
Humphrey has been a partner in the Kilpatrick Stockton firm since1967. In addition to serving as president of the State Bar in 2003-04, he is an original member and former chair of the state Disciplinary Hearing Commission and chaired the Ad Hoc Committee of the State Bar Council on Resident Real Estate Closings.
A member of the N.C. Judicial Standards Commission and chair of the N.C. Department of Transportation Aeronautics Council, Humphrey has served as president of the Forsyth County Bar Association and as a member of the ABA Task Force on the Model Definition of the Practice of Law.
Humphrey served as chair of the NCBA Construction Law Section in 1998-99. The NCBA established the section in 1987. Walter Hannah of Greensboro was the initial recipient of the Coman Award, followed by E.K. Powe of Durham and John Shaw of Raleigh.
Humphrey received his J.D., with honors, from the University of North Carolina School of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and the North Carolina Law Review. He is also a former president of the UNC Law Alumni Association. He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Duke University.
Founded in 1899 with headquarters in Cary since 1994, the North Carolina Bar Association is the largest and oldest voluntary professional legal organization in North Carolina.
