Crihfield Elected President of BarCARES

Article Date: 10/4/2007

Greensboro attorney G. Stevenson Crihfield was elected president of BarCARES® of North Carolina, Inc., at the nonprofit corporation’s annual meeting on Aug. 16 at the N.C. Bar Center in Cary. He succeeded Steve Coggins of Wilmington.

Also elected for 2007-08 were Robert N. Hunter Jr. of Greensboro (1st vice president); John A. Bowman of Durham, E. Lawson Brown of Burlington and Charles D. Coppage of Kill Devil Hills (vice presidents); Alisa D. Huffman of Raleigh (secretary); and Allan Head of Raleigh (treasurer).

BCNC was incorporated in June 1999 as a separate nonprofit subsidiary of the North Carolina Bar Association to market the BarCARES program to bar groups across the state and to monitor existing programs.

Other members of the BCNC board are: Sid Aldridge, Elwood Becton, Judge Ann Marie Calabria, Kelly Chambers, Justice Robert Edmunds, Charles Hinton III, Judge Robert Hunter, George Ligon, John Sarratt and Matthew Slotkin of Raleigh; Nancy Aycock of Greenville; Bill Bacon of Clinton; John Beyer of Charlotte; Mary Craven and Jim Early of Winston-Salem; Judge Melinda Crouch of Wilmington; Professor Margaret Currin of Campbell Law School; Ellen Hancox of Fayetteville; Associate Dean Margaret Kantlehner of Elon Law School; Camille Payton of Greensboro; Jay Reeves and Jan Simmons of Chapel Hill; Trawick Stubbs of New Bern; and Hank Van Hoy of Mocksville.

BarCARES® [Confidential Attorney Resource and Enrichment Services] is a “confidential,” short-term intervention counseling/coaching program provided cost-free to members of North Carolina bar groups that have established a BarCARES Program. The program provides up to three free visits each year that may be used by attorneys and law student (or immediate family member if the bar group adds a “family rider).

BarCARES accomplishes its goals by addressing the well-known problems of work and personal stress, clinical depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, as well as work-related issues such as conflict mediation, performance concerns, and career dissatisfaction.  This is done primarily through direct consultation and career reassessment services rendered by Human Resource Consultants, PA (HRC) of Chapel Hill and Raleigh, and their subcontractors. The participating counselors are licensed professionals and bound by the confidentiality requirements of their profession.

BarCARES services are currently available to members of the following groups: 1st Judicial District Bar (Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank & Perquimans Counties); 5th Judicial District Bar & New Hanover & Pender County Bars; 10th Judicial District Bar & Wake County Bar; 12th Judicial District Bar & Cumberland County Bar; 18th Judicial District Bar & Greensboro Bar (Guilford County); 21st Judicial District Bar (Forsyth County); and the Alamance County, Craven County, Durham County and Orange County bars.

Six out of North Carolina’s seven law schools also have a BarCARES Program for their students and faculty: Campbell University, Charlotte Law School, Elon University, NC Central University, Wake Forest University, and the University of North Carolina (fall 2007).
