YLD Sets Wills for Heroes Saturday, Oct. 6
Article Date: 9/12/2007
Volunteers Needed: Details Below! The NCBA YLD will be holding its first Wills for Heroes event on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Training Academy from 11 am - 5 pm (the last appointment is scheduled for 5 pm) at 1770 Shopton Road (28217).
Based on the huge response to this event, we will be providing 20 wills (with healthcare power of attorneys and living wills) per hour, for a grand total of 120 wills!
That amount is double the number that we were expecting. We would like everyone to volunteer all day if possible, but we appreciate any time that you can volunteer. We greatly appreciate those who have already volunteered their time for that day. Training for this event is scheduled from 10 am - 11 am. During this time, we will have about 30 minutes of training on basic NC law regarding wills, and about 30 minutes of practicing on the computers using the hotdocs software in case there are any questions.
If you are a licensed attorney practicing in the area of trusts & estates, please let me know if you would be willing to help with the training. Access the following links for your review:
(1) a Summary of the Program for 3 categories of experience - Estate Planning Experience Unknown, No Estate Planning Experience, or Experienced Estate Planner (read the one applicable to you);
(2) the Questionnaire that will be provided to each first responder before the event so that they can have the answers readily available for us to fill in the blanks for the wills;
(3) an Explanation of the Wills and Paragraphs; and
(4) an attorney checklist.
Also, please review the following "This is the Law Pamphlets" available on the NCBA website:
(1) Living Wills and Healthcare Powers of Attorney; and
(2) Protecting Your Assets: Wills, Trusts, and Powers of Attorney. If you are a notary, please bring your seal so that we can make sure we have enough notaries on hand. We will also need help entertaining children of the first responders. As you can see, there is plenty to do and we need as much help as possible.
If you know anyone else who is willing to volunteer for this event, please have them contact Jacquelyn Terrell at the NCBA at jterrell@ncbar.org. Please also let Jacquelyn know the amount of time that you are available to volunteer. If you have any additional questions, please let me know.
