NCBA Annual Meeting Set June 19-22

An attractive, action-packed agenda cast against the backdrop of North Carolina’s spectacular Crystal Coast can only mean one thing: the 2008 Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Bar Association is right around the corner.
Scheduled June 19-22 at the Sheraton Atlantic Beach Oceanfront Hotel, the 110th NCBA Annual Meeting promises to be one for the books. A weekend for colleagues, candidates, fellowship and fun is in store – starting with the Family Dinner on Thursday evening, June 19, at the N.C. Aquarium and continuing through Sunday’s organizational meeting of the 2008-09 Board of Governors.
 President-Elect Charles Becton | The board meeting will mark the beginning of Charles Becton’s term as president of the NCBA. Becton, a Durham resident who practices in Raleigh, will be sworn in Saturday night as the successor to Janet Ward Black of Greensboro.
Online registration is available and printed registration materials have been distributed to NCBA members. A number of excellent housing options remain following the anticipated sellout of the headquarters Sheraton Oceanfront.
As for activities and events, the menu promises to please. Friday’s traditional President’s Luncheon and Pro Bono Awards ceremony features the annual Willis Smith and Willis Smith Jr. Ethics and Professionalism Speaker, Marisol Jimenez McGee, former advocacy director and lobbyist for El Pueblo, Inc. A panel discussion will follow her presentation, “How Did We Get from There to Here: America’s Immigration Dilemma.”
Presentation of the H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award will also take place at the luncheon. Wade Smith of Raleigh, former state legislator who served as defense counsel in the Duke lacrosse case, will receive the award.
Christopher Graebe of Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge & Rice in Raleigh is the 2008 recipient of the William L. Thorp Award, presented annually since 1984 by the NCBA to the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year.
The recipient of the Deborah Greenblatt Outstanding Legal Services Attorney Award is Evan Lewis, senior managing attorney for Legal Aid of North Carolina’s Greenville office.
The Larger Law Firm Pro Bono Award recipient is Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard, LLP. The Immigration Law Association of the University of North Carolina School of Law will receive the Law Students Pro Bono Project Award.
The Chief Justice Award will be presented to NCBA's Young Lawyers Division in recognition of its outstanding service and for the project “Wills for Heroes.”
Friday evening’s schedule includes the General Practice Hall of Fame ceremony and fireworks on the Sheraton pier.
NCBA Past-President Charles Burgin of Marion, Roy A. Cooper Jr. of Nashville, Walter H. Jones Jr. of Mooresville, James M. Kimzey of Brevard, H. Edward Knox of Charlotte and Sally Scherer of Raleigh will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
On Saturday, the morning is filled with a blockbuster General Session featuring the State of the Judiciary address by Chief Justice Sarah Parker and election of a new NCBA president-elect.
Two major awards will also be presented during the General Session. Retired U.S. District Court Judge William Osteen Sr. of Greensboro will receive the NCBA’s highest honor, the Judge John J. Parker Memorial Award. Parks Helms, longtime chair and current member of the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, will receive the Dr. I. Beverly Lake Sr. Public Service Award.
Candidates for the appellate judiciary, governor and the U.S. Senate will also address the General Session, followed by a timely luncheon featuring John Davis, president of NC FREE.
That’s quite an agenda, and it’s only the beginning. A number of excursions, sporting events, CLE presentations and law school gatherings are also on tap, along with an outstanding gala reception and dance on Saturday night following the installation of the new NCBA president.
Whether it’s online or on paper, register as soon as you can for the NCBA Annual Meeting and set your sights for Atlantic Beach the weekend of June 19-22.
